GSX Eclipse
GSX Eclipse
Well I already posted something like this over in the first Gen Forum so I figured I should post it here also
I have been trying to research the 97+ GSX eclipse. I am going to be entering college next fall and I am selling my car. I need a car that is reliable and can be driven about 65-70 miles a day. I can't be spending a whole lot of money on stuff breaking. I also want the car to be decently fast with good gas mileage.
So my question is, what do you think of the GSX, is it reliable, are there any known problems that I should be concerned about.
And finally are any of these problems covered by an extended warranty that I would buy with the car.
Oh and it will be a 5spd
Thanks in advance for all the help.

i had a 97 gst
don't get it
sure it looked good and it was fast and handled well but
not reliable
a lot of turbo lag
had transmission blow up on me (fixed under warrenty)
paint chips off
interior was very cheaply made
good thing it was leased and i got rid of it asap

My wife had a 95 gsx that was great, she misses it even tho she's driving a 330xi now. The car was reliable but had a lot of quality problems (loose trim, alarm went off intermittently, cheap paint, electronics were the worst!) Mechanically the car was pretty sound, she had to replace the front cv joints 1x and that was expensive; also had to replace the oil sending unit (expensive). Car had 77K on it when we sold it to a guy who loves it. Turbo lag was there, but in 5th gear at 75, you're right on boost and the car just took off w/ no downshifting. Hope that helps.

Good choice in vehicle moves... My wife went from a '96 GS-T to a '99 E46 328i, both manuals...
Her GS-T had only 3 Years/34k on it when she moved to the BMW so we didn't have it long enough to experience any real issues. In fact it was only in the shop a couple of times for minor issues and all under warranty. As for the so-called lag (I'll hold off on the real meaning of this...
) it wasn't really present with the Garrett T-25 turbo (I find it interesting that Mitsubishi used a Garrett turbo instead of a Mitsu unit in the 2gens). The thing I hated was that this turbo ran out of steam once above 5500 revs. But at 3k revs, just above the boost threshold, it would hit maximum boost imediately when floored and was a blast to drive.

May I ask why you want to sell the 2.2 CL? That sounds like a good car to take with you. You can save youself some money not doing this. The last time I check on Autotrader a 97 gsx will run you between $9000 to $15000 depending on milage. How much can you get your 2.2 for?
GSXs are fun and can be veryquick. I had two friend's in highsachool who both had them. But don't expect ANY reliability. Transmission problems are one thing and then expect the turbos to eat themselves up. Most people who drive it don't let the turbo cool down and it's busted in 50-65K miles. First thing to get if you have that car is full synthetic oil as well as a turbo timer (either that or siti n the car for a couple minutes after you've been driving). Look into one with almost no miles, pay a bit more for it but then you'll know that you treat the turbo right for it's whole lifetime.
