Got one tire with a bubble on it. What should I do?

Seriously, I have one tire with a bubble on it and it is growing. The tires have 14,000 miles on them and I have no cash to buy 4 new tires cause I would want to go to 18s and get rims, yada, yada, yada.

Choices:
1) Buy one new michelin
2) go to the dealer and complain and hope for some warranty relief
3) shop around for a used michelin
4) keep driving until it blows out and I crash in a fiery mess
5) ask you dudes for advice

Not an option: buying 4 new Toyo's

What do you think?

Fix it now whatever the cost. Beter than a blowout.
Buy nitto 555 extreme at 112/tire

MikeS 18, I had that exact same problem happen to me a few months ago. I took the car to one of those authorized Michelin dealers and tried to get them to replace it under warranty but had no such luck. I only had about 12,000 miles on the car but still had to pay about $210 just to get that one tire replaced. It's important that you get the tire replaced as quickly as possible because there is a real threat of a blowout there.

You should get the tire replaced as quickly as possible. I would get the Michelin again.

Every new car owner should purchase "Road Hazard" coverage on their OEM Tires. For a nominal fee, the tires will be replaced at no charge for their entire treadlife if anything fails on the tire for any reason. That's right. I paid $14.75 each to DiscountTire for "no questions asked" coverage on my Michelins. This is one bet that stacks the odds in the driver's favor. Do it. Do it now.

Mike, you know the options...

Since you don't want the new tires, pay the piper, and get another OEM tire.

1. DON'T MIX TIRES
2. Pay for the road hazard warranty
3. Check your Michelin guide very carefully (you should have got one with the Acura manuals)
4. You realize that other people have had trouble with these tires doing the same thing -- see # 2.

Please drive slowly for now and make sure your spare is properly inflated!

DJ, unless they changed something recently, impact breaks are not covered by warranty. That is considered owner neglect. Make sure you read your warranty. Maybe Discount Tire is taking care of it, but Michelin would not. Been there, done that.

Exactly what it sounds like. It is a lump sticking out of the sidewall that indicates that the tire is breaking down and will SOON EXPLODE! Not that bad, but certainly not good.

Hey, DJ; Wanna Trade?

How do you know if you have a bubble in your tire?

You will see a bulge that looks like a bubble in the sidewall of your tire. The Audi folks with their RE-040s (I think that's the one) can tell you all about it).

BTW -- When I used to get my Michelin's for my older Bimmer at Discount Tire -- they really did honor their "Road Hazard" coverage. I had a couple of tires go bad and they fixed me up...

Anyone here know how stuff like this happens and how to prevent it from happening

does weather have anything to do with it?

I hit a rock the size of a brick about a month ago(it was night time) and when Igot home I saw no damage but the next day during lunch I saw a nice bulge coming out of my sidewall. I had to get it changed and it sucked b/c I only had 8000 miles, but it is better than having the tire blowout while driving.

Possibles...

1. Under inflation

2. Hitting a curb or a large pot hole

3. Manufacturing default -- sorry, it happens to some tires more than others. I wasn't kidding about the Audi guys -- check their forum out, they toss the stock -040s like crazy (sorry if wrong Br'stone designation).

Note: I kept all of my stock stuff -- so the stock tires with 30 miles on them are up the street (just in case, etc). If you ever get a chance you will marvel at how floppy the sidewalls of the MXM4s (our stock tires) are. I still find it hard to believe that they are XL rated...

Boy, that must take up a lot of room. I'd be happy to "store" on of them here no charge!

An impact break, or bubble occurs when a large amount of force is applied to the sidewall, hitting a curb, running over an object. This causes the steel belts in the sidewall to spread apart causing the rubber between where the belts moved to bubble, Basically it's a weak spot in the tire. Since there are no steel belts holding the air in where they separated, they push out of the sidewall rubber.

I've also been there, after a trip through a huge pothole.

Replace the tire immediately! I'd recommend that if the other tires have enough tread left, get another Michelin.

Because it's a performance tire, it's unlikely that your local corner tire store will have them in stock (mine had to be ordered from Reno).

Regarding our warranty: it's true that an impact break is not covered, but according to my tire guys, Michelin usually okays a 50% break on the price if the tire has less thna 10K miles or so...I was out that door at under $160.

Good luck!
