God bless the V1!!!!

Ok - so I had to travel down to Boca Raton today for business, and the fastest way here is on the Florida Turnpike - a haven for FHP.

On 5 seperate incidents, my V1 gave me about 60-90 seconds of warning. Never less than that.

The best one was when the fuzz was coming at me from the other direction. I got a huge lead on warning, and was at 73 (70 speed limit) when I passed him - Ka blaring the whole time. Then, 30-60 seconds later, I get a Ka alert from the rear. WTF? So I slow down. 30-60 seconds later, I see someone haulin ass in the left lane - it's the cop!! He pulls the Accord behind me over (the accord was doing 85+ easy - he was pissed I was doing 73 in the left lane - bwahahahaha serves him right)

I love my V1.

Yes, I had some good warning with my 8500 also on the turnpike. The one & only speeding ticket I got was on the turnpike too. 109 in a 70. I was in my boss's E55 hauling ass to work one morning after doing him a favor with it. I had my older K40 too. It wasn't the detector that failed. It was the stupid heated windshield on the MB. That cuts the range ALOT with any detector.

Relax there, Shawn! number for number, the escort 8500 beat the V1 in performance and price. V1 is a good machine, but it is getting old and too expensive for what it is worth. Just my opinion, though so no one needs to get their titties all upset.

Price....YES

Numbers...Show me somewhere other then that bogus Website that ESCORT runs and I will agree with you.

I do admit that the V1 is due for a MAJOR ergonomic overhaul, but right now performance is more important then looks.

V1 doesnt help when the cop wants to be a dick!! I got pulled over cuz the cop "saw" me speeding, and i knew he didnt have his radar on cuz my V1 didnt go off... and he couldnt give me a ticket for speeding so he gave me a ticket for failure to make a turn signal!!! Damn!

Since I'm kinda new, maybe you could explain how you know they are owned by Escort, & know they tested an older V1 model. I also have a V1. If they are baised, why didn't they vote the 8500 number 1? They rated the Bel #1. Just wondering?? The V1 is ok, but it's too big for my & lacks features. That's why I switched to the 8500. I still use the V1 in my truck.

I found this reply from an old post:

The radartest.com story is a little more complicated than that, and a lot
sorrier to tell. Basically, Craig Peterson, the creator of the site,
markets himself as a self-employed "paid consultant" to the radar detector
industry. His opinions (and probably his test numbers) appear to be for
sale to the highest bidder(s), and have been for years.
Peterson's unique brand of objective journalism first surfaced in an
Automobile Magazine detector review several years ago (December, 1995). In
it, he picked a Bel model with dramatically inferior specs and features as
the #1 finisher ahead of the Valentine One, which was then so far ahead of
the industry in every respect it wasn't even funny. Mike Valentine
delivered a rebuttal of the technical points of Peterson's review (also
see Valentine's own page on Peterson.)

I Concur that radartest.com is a Koncour site.

The dude that did their tests is a long-time "consultant" for escort. Go to www.valentineone.com and read what Mike has to say about that guy.

And here is the specific Valentine link (good for a chuckle) regarding "Mr. I Don't Care If That Stinger Missle Is Behind ME")

link: http://www.valentine1.com/lab/V1Hater.asp

"Craig Peterson's December [1995] radar detector comparison test generated more angry letters--and on-line discussion--than anything since the Davis Ferrari/raccoon incident." -- Automobile, March, 1996
The V1 Hater...same old story one more time.

Craig Peterson's detector test in Automobile (February 2001) is completely predictable; he has made a career of denigrating V1, starting in March, 1993, in Car Audio and Electronics when he knocked it for having "dual antennas." On his website (www.radartest.com) he says he "distrusts" the bogey counter and wants warning on radar only when it's "up ahead." Which makes him the only tester on the planet who thinks the Radar Locator is a bad idea.

Shawn,

Be my guest : http://www.speedzones.com/

I, too was skeptical of the tests conducted on radartest.com. I read what Mike Valentine had to say about it and indeed it cast some doubt of his methods. And I couldn't help wondering if (what's his name from radartest.com) had some agenda in downplaying V1. So that is why I also checked out Speedzones.com. I found their testing to be a bit less opinionated. I was about to buy V1 but in reading both tests I figured that Escort gave me the best buy feature for feature. Additionally, I work with electronics engineers who have either V1 and Escort and both were very pleased with theirs respectively. It came down to what i was willing to pay. I liked the my escort for $250 (shipping and no tax). Of course if Valentine had something newer (V2?) at the time I bought the escort, I likely would have spent a bit more for the Valentine quality and reputation. I just didn't see how 399.00 could be justified.
In any case, some detector is better than no detector, right?

Looks, like i posted before reading some of the other posts:

As i said earlier, I am not entirely trusting of Craig's results, but I didn't just use his test and the deciding factor. In Speedzone, all manufacturers participated with the exception of Valentine. Doesn't that seem odd?
Also, when I when over the numbers on Speedzone, Escort still tallied higher, even if it was only by a few points. So overall I'm not necessarily say that Escort is better, but I wouldn't say that V1 blow Escort out of the water either. If anything I hope these tests push Mike Valentine to release a new, better than ever product. You'll be seeing my Escort on Ebay soon enough if that happens.

Will we ever end this debate? Not likely. The V1 has proven it's range in detecting radar for years. The others have just recently caught up but this time had to work for it rather than copy the super-heterodyne adaptation Mike V. and the others at Escort in the 70s came up with.

For me, having the locator is essential when driving. Now some might say who cares where the signal is coming from, "you're still going to slow down." WRONG! If you know where the signal is coming from and deem it not to be a threat, you won't need to slow down. If it just beeps, to me, that is worse than falsing because it forces me to guess more and makes me slow down when I didn't have to.

Spend a month and go to different states where they might use different or older guns that your state might not use. VT still uses X where in CT, I almost ignore it. If I'm in VT, I know any X threat could be real so having that locator is priceless. Ignore it from the sides, or giving caution when it slowly approaches from my 6. I always know, I never have to guess and therefore, never slow down when I don't need to.

Combined that with the range, the Logic modes, auto-dimming, 2 volume controls, concealed display just to name some of the features and $400 is cheap. I've save thousands with this detector and many headaches not having to guess where. I can't wait to see what Mike V. does next and watch everyone scramble to catch up again.

I have no rights to enter this debate....

...because in the past, I have been down this road (bashing the V1, supporting the Passport) and I can honestly say "I didn't know what the hell I was talking about..." until I switched from Escort/Passport to Valentine; the almighty V1.

I can't talk. Because I spoke harshly about this masterpiece called V1 out of pure ignorance. Essentially I was a V1-hater. I grew up with original Escort, little Passport, Solos and all those numbered detectors.

Then I went out and got "The One" and tried it. I was converted. I will never go back.

So my only contribution to this thread is: I have been in Kansas and Missouri for two years. I am ready to turn off completely my X-band capability because I have never detected X-band radar in these two states. This should greatly minimize the falsing. Who's with me? Who else is going to do this?

I'll let you know how comfortable I feel afterwards.....

I was suprised on Thanksgiving in NJ. I had my 8500 in the rental car I had. I was suprised they still use X band. On the NJ Turnpike heading south towards the Delaware bridge. Around exit 3. The 8500 did it's job, I'm sure the V1 would have also, but just suprised that the NJ troopers still use X band.

Here in AZ the only thing giving off X band of grocery stores. I must add by the way that if I ever were in another state, it wouldn't matter what detector I had, I would sleep through an X alarm all night. Anywayz, back to the topic.
I drive every work day from Tucson down to Green Valley on I-19, the free way to Nogales and the border. There are gunning police on my 45Km (yeah even though its in america, i guess its too close to mexico to post in our speeds!) trip alteast 2 out of the 5 days. Look at my sig, hands down the best money I have ever spent on my car is my V1. That says it all. (although, please Zanio don't take offense, I Love YOU!). Without it I wouldn't have half my mods, the state department of highway traffic would. and I'd have been late on more than one occasion, hence losing valuable production. I won't go on, but I also won't ever own a car that doesn't have a V1 or the most recent valentine model in it. They have a life longer here.
