Ghetto RamAir?

So for all u guys with the 03's...if you removed (or vented) the little black plastic piece where the driver's side road lamp would go, would that make enough a difference in the car's power (given you had some sort of CAI)?

IMO, not much . . you would notice more with the Icebox because it had an intake horn down there verses with CAIs that have the filter down there. Also, you need to have enough surface area to capture and effectively funnel the air so that it actually creates a RAM effect.

If I hadn't put '02 roadlamps in place of the fake vent, I would have added ducting to cool the brakes.

At high speeds yes but i'm talking 80mph+ I did this when i had my 01 CLS. You feel a little difference.

The reason i ask is because i recently installed an icebox and pretty much immediately drilled little holes into that roadlamp cover. i should've waited so i could see if there was a difference with or without the vents.

take the vents off. If you want to optimize the positive pressure going into the tube you could seal off everything around the tube.

Did you just drill holes or did you remove the whole blacked out piece? If the whole piece is opened up you might see some improvements at higher speeds.

I've done something similar, but it is opened such that direct air hits straight into the intake breather horn. Based on my 1/4 mile times I saw some improvements on top end. About 6-100ths and just over 2 MPH better in the 1/4 . . . so not a lot. I does seem that the midrange feels stronger . . . but too hard to quantify.

Thanks Zapata . . I've not thought of that.

You probably want to clean or replace you air filter more often with this setup.

yea just a thought. Luckily the CLS draws air from the front fascia so it's area that has high air pressure once the car gets moving. I don't know what the effects would be in terms of performance. I guess it would depend on how the car reacts to essentially the longer CAI that would be created after sealing everything around it. Would be a cool project no doubt.

Any of the engineers know the CFM of air flow travelling at 80mph v. CFM of the engine at load of 80mph?

Absolutely. I clean it every oil change because more trash can get in there now.

Hum, since my attempt to create a larger Ram Air intake area failed . . . because of ground clarence issues, I may have to give this a go. As soon as I get my tranny fixed. :P

I think removing one road lamp and leaving the other one on is ghetto looking. For CHrist sakes people, if you want real induction just buy a supercharger !

The 03's dont have roadlamps...unless u put them in yourself. Black plastic covers are used in their place...

There is no road lamp there. Just a cheesy blacked out area where it looks like lights could go. So you don't even notice they are gone . . . unless you walk up to it and look right at it.

At least that's how it is on my TLS. I'll have to check one of the CLS guys to see exactly what theirs looks like.

I took mine out when I went took the car to the dyno and never put it back on. My car is black and you can't tell it is not there. i am going to buy the lenses though b/c they look better than the fake vents.

I did this when the 2003's came out. I bought those black inserts and cut the back off the one. I then took out the extra piece at the bottom of our stock air box, added a flexible 3" tube after I cut a 3" hole at the bottom of the air box. Ran the tube to the cut out in the insert. plus I put some metal mesh in the tube so no debris gets in there. I have a k&n in the stock air box. I can tell a difference because in the winter I put the light back in and you can definitly tell. Of course it's not a huge difference, but noticeable. Plus the sound is awesome at full throttle. If some can host I'll take pic's.

I have the front fog lamp inserts removed, i replaced them with the grill tech style grill made by ST200. Ive had them for 5 months now and just installed my ICEBOX last weekend, so i really cant gauge the differnce in power The insterts look sweet though, ill try to post a pick of them. you could get a plastics company to mold a horn that directs air from the air vent to the CAI intake, i thought about doin ghtat to mine but just dont' have the time.
