Getting Shift Boot ring to stay

I just got a new shift knob and was trying to figure out how to get the shift boot ring to clip into the new knob. Since the clips are part of the old shift knob and I didn't want to ruin it, I had to devise another way to do it.

Here is a pic of the new knob:

To get the ring to fit perfectly, I did the following.

I purchased a Rubber Stopper from Lowes Home Improvement. Found it in the Hardware isle in drawers marked "Hard to find parts"

I then got it home an drilled a hole through the center:

Here you can see that it fits on the inside of the boot ring perfectly:

I then slid it onto the shaft....I drilled a small enough hole that it was very tight fitting on the shaft so it doesn't slip:

I then slid the boot back over and fit the ring over the rubber stopper....after that, I just screwed the new knob on.

Here is a close up....you can see that the ring is flush against the knob. Since I used a stopper that fit into the ring, the ring doesn't move or rattle.

I wanted to get mine done right away too.....I almost hacked up my original, but thought better of it. After reading about people using grommits, I thought of this idea. Had to wander around the hardware store for about 45 minutes just to find what I was looking for...actually purchased about 4 different types of grommits/stoppers just in case this one didn't work. (Since they are about $.75 each, no big loss ) This was the first one I tried and it worked perfectly.

Yeah, I should have taken more time and thought it through, but i called my parts friend and he said it was only like $8 for the chrome ring if I ever wanted to go back to stock.

It's a Razo GT Advance knob.

Model #RA96. Paid $47 plus shipping. (I wanted it quick, so I paid the $14 2nd day shipping, otherwise, it would have been $6 shipping). There are 4 GT Advance knobs numbered RA95-RA98.

Different lengths and different weights. Mine is the short length with the 340G weight.

Got it at Sound Domain:

You may want to check with them. When I called, they told me it was in stock...I asked if they had two, and they said mine was the last one and they could have another in a week or two.

Looks great. Is there any particular reason you chose the 350 g. knob over the 170 g. one? (I should add that I have no idea what the stock knob weighs.)

I like the heavier feel when I shift.....it seems to make speed shifting a little quicker since the weight assists in the shift into gear (at least that is the way it feels to me)
