Gas pump loophole

Gas pump loophole
I also posted this on OT, for those that read it.
Here's how it works. You need to find place that switches from "pay whenever" to pre-pay at a certain time each night/day (one local station does it at 10:00 PM). It will only work if the system switches automatically.
So, i pull up about 1 minute before 10:00 tonight and begin filling. RIGHT at 10:00, the pump shuts off and resets to 0. The clerk notices nothing. I finish filling the rest of the tank. I go in and pay $9.96 for $21.58 gallons worth of gase.
Cliff Notes:
1) Find a gas station that automatically switches from post-pay to pre-pay at a specific time.
2) begin filling just before that time (one or two minutes at most)
3) Pump resets when the switch is made, erasing the amount of gas you've put.
4) Complete filling of tank.
5) Pay much less than you should

My local station is a Sunoco, but it might just be their own policy. Ask the clerk inside, or look for a giant sign like mine has "PRE-PAY FROM 10:00 PM TO 5:00 AM"

Just so y'all know, i don't condone stealing gas. I did tell the clerk, but he said not to bother with it - it was the machine's fault for erasing the amount. If the people who owned the station were assholes, or raped me on prices, i wouldn't have said shit - but it's the cheapest gas around and everyone who works there is always nice to me.

Wouldn’t using a gun on the attendant be much more effective?
If you’re gonna STEAL, go all out.

Ok here in NH, we have a pay-at-pump but there is no a switch policy at certain time.
Once, I filled up my tank to the rim, however, just before I start pumping the counter should reset, it did not!... I filled up and tried to find out how much I was charged.. it was $9 and change. The same amount the last guy has pumped before me. A full tank would be at least $25.
What can I do? I was told ...nothing can be done, I was charged less than $10 for a full tank because the pump messed up.
Nashua.

did you guys know that after you can trick the pumps into trickling more gas into your tank??
lets say you put in 10.00 in gas. you can turn off the pump (either by putting the sliding lever back down or reaching your hand into the pump holder and pushing the trigger up to "close the sale" then while the pump nozzel is still in your car, lift the gas hose above your head, the gravity will force the valve in the nozzel to open and trickle all the gas in the hose (sometimes up to a gallon!) into your tank.
sometimes (and this happens VERY rarely) you will find a pump (i know of 2 in the milwaukee area) that have nearly worn out valves in the nozzle and when i hold the hose over my head, it continuously trickles gas into the tank at about the rate of a steady stream of piss. ive stood there for 10 minutes before doing this, pumping about 15 gallons into my truck for free. no one said shit to me, i go there everytime im in that part of town as they still havent fixed the pump.

F all you assholes who would try any bullshit like this!!!!!!!!!!! Mother F'ers........like you would cost me money out of my paycheck. I paid my way through first couple years of college working at gas stations and it was shitty work, long hours and little pay. Having to deal with asswipes who drove off wasn't as simple as saying oh well........that kinda shit came outta my pay check. NOT APPRECIATED! :thumbsdn:

Also, there is the round-off loophole, let us say you pumped $10.00 of gas. If you squeeze a bit more quickly it will pump a bit more with out charging you! I saw the Galons counter tick up but the price counter did not!

HAHAHA, chill out dude, i did my time at a gas station for a year myself as a younger lad. rest assured, i dont do any fuckin "gas and go's" i pay for my gas, shut off the pump, and continue to pump gas till it wont pump anymore, its just taking advantage of the mechanism that operates the pumps. if you did work at a gas station then you probably remember "sticking the tank" every night i had to take this loooooong stick, it had to be 20 feet long or more, and get a reading from the 3 tanks (one per grade of gas) anyhow, thats how they actually keep track of the amount of gas in the tank. its VERY unscientific and its only accurate to within about 25 gallons, so in the end, NO ONE FUCKING KNOWS OR CARES, not the other consumers, not the gas station attendant, not the gas station owner, not anyone. i will continue to do what i do every single time i fill up, fuck it, until they make fault-proof pumps, ill do it, no reason not to. and those that dont are the ones who are losing out as far as im concerned

Sucks, cause we can't pump our own gas... and I don't really mind about the free gas stuff, but I hate it because some gas attendents are just so F*ing careless!!! One time they almost broke the gas cap hanger on the fuel door, and I get gas drips once in a while too onto my car!!!
And another annoying thing is that they love to over crank the gas cap!! is like damn, don't you hear the click for the first time? These people do not have to prove anything to me about their manhood by over cranking on my gas cap!!!!!
Sorry, had to vent.... just got gas.....

Sticking tanks sucks. So did the pumping. But I did that in Northern Michigan while goign to school up there. Colder than shit out and having to jack around with that sucked. Plus scooping snow off the damn caps so I could stick the tanks.

I am surprised by the hysteria and reactionary responses this topic has generated -- and the slippery slope arguments that "justify" them. I find it difficult to believe that a few people pulling this stunt at isolated pumps in specific gas stations at a specific time of day/night is going to send gas prices spiraling out of control. The market works, in part, on im/perfect information. It is not driven by petty shoplifting.
When a consumer gets screwed because a seller has inserted some kind loophole, it's buyer beware. Why don't you hold the seller to the same standard of vigilance? The attendent has been alerted. If they don't fix it, then whose fault is it?

Because this is intentionally attempting to steal which screws the working stiff at the station. I'm all for consumer action but not this way. If you want to stick it to the gas companies....STEALING GAS isn't the way.........don't buy gas if you have social misgivings about oil.

There are theft instructions in this thread. Whether it works or not is not the question, if I were a mod I would delete it (not lock it).
I can't believe I'm surrounded by a bunch of petty criminals...you guys aren't even stealing any real amount money. Cheap bastards.
And Jim, your post was hilarious. Do you really steal gasoline like that? You can't take advantage of a broken device like that. It's stealing.
"The young people are ruining this country...at age 21 I would have never, ever stolen gasoline from the local service station just because I could. I pay for everything I use."

1 Gallon of gas is equal to 231 cubic inches in volume.
A hose with a 1/2” diameter I.D. would have to be 96.25 FEET long to deliver a gallon of gas once the pump is shut off.
You must have really long arms to hold that sucker up

you guys crack me up!!!!! hahahahahah
first of all Zapata -
how does stealing 1 dollar worth of gas by way of tipping the hose up screw the "working class stiff" the shit aint coming out of his paycheck!!!! give me a break!! hes making 7 bucks an hour jockeying a register, his paycheck isnt dependant on 1 gallon of gas trickleing out of the freakin hose!! christ, people spill more gas on the damn ground everyday than that!
gto2050 -
visit me in jail??! hahahaha, puuuuuhleeeeeze. i turn the pump on, pump $X.XX into my tank, turn the pump off, tip the hose, let the gas in the hose trickle into my tank (usually up to a gallon) then pay the $X.XX i pumped. that is not a fucking crime, and even if it were, its not punishable by JAIL!!
Ken -
to answer your question, yeah, i do "steal" gas like that, if you can even consider it that. and YES, i can take advantage of a broken device like that!! why not!! if the pump was broken in favor of the station, and people were getting screwed out of money, even if its only 5 cents per customer, thats 100000 times worse than what time doing....because those pumps only get checked once a year by the state, so it could go on for a year, or more, and because do you honestly think a gas station owner would correct a problem with the pumps that give them an extra 5 cents per customer, or more?? FUCK NO THEY WOULDNT!! hahaha, they would be happy to steal 5 cents, especially considering that none of the customers would probably even notice!!
Example -
about a month ago, i was at a gas station, a mobil. it was DEEEEEP GHETTO. trashy pumps, bullet proof glass, etc etc. the pump colors didnt even correspond with the grade of gas like they should, complete mess!! anyhow, i turned the pump on, and BEFORE I EVEN PUT PRESSURE ON THE PUMP TO PUMP MY GAS, the pump jumped up to 10 cents!!!!! just like that!! i got ZERO GAS but the pump charged me 10 cents!!! WTF is that all about?!!! im sorry, but 10 cents is 10 cents, im not about to get screwed, i went in there and bitched to the non-english speaking middleeastern owner and he didnt have a clue what i was talking about (yeah right) but i demanded that he give me a dime! and finally he did, after i showed him outside the pump showing the sale of 0.10 cents and 0.000 gallons of gas.
my point is, SCREW IT!!! ill do it forever! i dont care, people are dicking eachother out of petty little things or money every single waking second. for everytime i get an extra gallon of gas out of a pump, im sure somehow, somewhere, im getting dicked out of money in other ways (usually my sprintpcs bill just kiddin)
i have no shame about taking gas the way i do, and NO, i wouldnt ever consider doing a "gas-n-go" that is a crime.

gas hoses are DEFINATELY bigger than 1/2" inside diameter. the outside diameter of gas hoses around here is at LEAST 1-1/2" so id be willing to assume that the inside diameter is no less than 1 full inch so its not quite as bad as you made it out to be, but i see your point. so its not even like im getting a full gallon or anything!! see! im not such a bad guy!!
although those 2 stations where the valve is broken, thats like winning the fucking slots in vegas!! CHA CHING!!!!
