Gas mileage thread #12,561
Ok, we've covered this topic thousands of times, but I got 30mpg this past weekend driving to NJ and back for the RonJon Ross Dock meet.. Tanked up the night before, and didn't need gas till I got back home. 390 miles on 13 gallons.
https://acurazine.com/forums/acurazine-clubs-meets-15/
Had never gotten better then 26mpg on a long trip, butI think I can do even better then the 30mpg now... I did 65 w/ cruise on to the CT meeting area. We headed up with about 11 cars in a caravan from CT, so the last half of the trip was without cruise, and I hit 90mph a couple of times...
As much as I talk about getting something else to replace my CLS eventually, it's tough to ignore the excellent gas mileage I can get with the CLS. I don't think I'd be even close if I owned a Mustang/G35c/IS350/330....

I've never put more than 14.xx gallons in it at one time... I usually tank up once a week. So I needed to get gas for the week anyways. I don't like to get gas in the morning before work, and the lines are long after work @ 5-6pm, so I make sure I tank up on the weekends. I've only seen the low fuel light come on like 4-5 times in 51K miles of driving my CL.... I don't like to let the tank run low. It's a throw back to the old days when cars had carbs and gunk from the tank would gunk up the carb.
I don't know how you guys can feel comfortable running around with the low fuel light on for 60,80,100 or more miles...
edit: I think I've put in 15 gallons once (I can check my logbook) but that was because I was running w/ the low fuel light on for 25 miles or so.

The main thing is to just put in on cruise control and just cruise... I've been doing that on my commute to work ('cert when I hit traffic), and have noticed a improvement in mpg in the last couple of weeks that I have been doing it...
I'll have to grab my logbook to calculate the mileage over the last couple of weeks, but I think my MA/NJ run will skue the results...
I'll have to go a couple more tankfuls before I can quantify the results of changing my driving style (from aggressive to passive) on my commute...

I'm not sure if I want to start modding now, as I'm getting itchy for another car (almost 4 years w/ the 6spd now). But with the excellent gas mileage and the fact that it's paid for, might justify throwing $1K into it for springs/struts/headers, and keeping it for a bit longer. I just don't know if I'd want to deal with the hassle of returning it to stock later to sell it (you know what I mean).
I showed my 16 y/o neice the meet pics yesterday, and she says I'm too old to pull off the "ricer boy" look
I told her I want my car to look like this:

i just filled up today after driving down to point pleasant and some other mixed driving
355.6 miles on 13.3 gallons = 26.73 mpg
not too shabby
does the CL-P get worse mileage than the CL-S?
probably, because the exhaust is better on the S. right?

What is wrong with my car? What should I be looking at / fixing?

I usually get around 280 a tank (13-14 gallons) when I drive agressively.
That's my experience anyways... YMMV (your mileage may vary)

I make a 300 mile trip every Sunday and Friday for work from the Pittsburgh area to Philadelphia. There are a good amount of moutains to go up and down and I average about 29 MPG, but I drive aggressively and cruise at about 85mph. One time I was make the trip with my pops and was driving slow on cruise control, I got about 32mpg.
Like I keep saying, the CL-S is one of the best highway cars I have ever driven. And I have driven some nice cars. (i.e Dodge spirit, chrysler lebaron, geo metro, and a dodge shadow) None of them can compar to the CL.

Anyways, all that asside, 30mph is really good, I used to average 28mpg doing mixed city and hwy driving. I did notice that going 70 to 75mph gets you much better economy than 90mph. I'd say under 80mph is good, above that you're causing too much turbulance in the air.
The good fuel economy of the CL is another reason why I'm not giving more thought into selling it.
