I live in NY and you need both, so I have both. Like 1stGenCL said, not point in giving the cops something to hassle you on. It seems that the local cops aren't too bad, but the State Troopers will bust you on this.

I live in MA and have had mine off for a year now. It's in the truck so if I get pulled over I'll tell the cop that it was about to fall off. Hopefully, as long as I have it handy, he/she might let me off.

I got pulled over while driving in NEW JERSEY without a front plate.
It was a temporary roadblock kind of like a DUI check and he only saw the front of the car when he waved me to pull off to the side.

Once I pointed out to the DUMB-ASS local cop that I was from PA, (no front plate), he let me drive away.

I live in San Jose, Ca where the cops love to harrass the "racers"...i took off my front license plate when i first got it and so far have no problem. My reasoning is that if you drive an expensive car without no major mods like 2.2 inch drop...then u should be fine.

I haven't had a front plate since 95 and I have never been pulled over for it. Even though IL law requires that you have a front and rear plate on your vehicle I have never been pulled over for it(knock on wood). I live in Northbrook and I see a lot of people who drive around without the front plate in my neighborhood.

This reminds me of when I first moved to DC from PA. Those of you from PA know that there is no front plate in PA but when I bought my first car in DC, the dealer put the plates on for me. Anyhow, at that time, I guess there was a front plate and back plate and one plate had stickers on it and one did not.

Well I was leaving work one day and a metermaid was writing me a ticket. The meter had not expired and I was not in a no-parking zone but he had enough time on his hands to notice that the dealer had put the plates on backwards and proceeded to hand me a $50.00 ticket.

What a bumbass!

Anyhow, I'm really careful now to make sure that my plates are on correctly and I've only gotten one ticket in the CL (amazingly).

But a word of warning if you plan to come to DC...watch the meters, watch the parking zones and times, and watch the streetcleaning signs.

i get pulled over for no front plate MANY MANY MANY times..this is exactly what I say:

"Sir, I'm getting my car detailed in a couple days. The detail shop instructed me to take off the front plate so he can detail the front bumper. The reason that he cant take off my front plate is because he said that license plates are property of the government, and they are issued to me, therefore my detailer said that he is not allowed to remove any plates on any vehicle. The reason that I took the plate off now instead of tomorrow morning (pretending like your getting your car detailed tomorrow) is because my front license plate holder is complicated to take off without the proper tools, which I dont own, but my friend has the tools, so I went to his house eariler today, to get it done. I didnt think there would be any problems if I drove around for 12 hours without a front plate. Im not familiar how seriuos this is to not have a front plate, though if it is very seriuos, I will go back right now and put it on."

that always works, and usually the cop smiles too..or some shit, and says no dont worry, just make sure to put it back on when your done.

you could also say that your getting a new bumber....if you have ANY scratches or damages on your bumper this would help a lot too, since you can instruct the officer to "see for himself"

I’m sure if they know Amir’s capabilities with hand tools, they know this is ABSOLUTELY TRUE.

in Michigan, you dont have to put one, But you see some stupid mofos got the plate holder installed on the front bumber and there is nothing on it. I see alot of those. I think the dealer installs it and they forget to take it out or they dont care or they are just stupid that they think it looks good .

...or the NASCAR logo on the front plate.

When I lived in Seattle I had no front plates for four years. Then I went to college and came back to drive what became my sisters car and I was busted cruising at Alki beach w/o a front plate. The funny thing was my female friend was changing out of her bikini in the passenger seat when she looked up to see a cop standing in the middle of the road waving us over.

"hmmm...officer, I don't know why she took off her pants...she just did"

anyway, I didn't say that...the cop didn't even notice, but the officer let me go w/ a warning for no front plates.

Anyone look under the plate holder and notice that their paint has been rubbed away? I did, and had the dealer repaint it...only to find the paint gone 2 weeks later again. Cheap ass paint!!!!!!!!!!!

I prefer this look - it's legal and preserves the front bumper aesthetics:

When I was considering taking mine off, I started paying attention to other car's front plates. You don't have to look long before you see a car without it. And I've NEVER seen a Vette or Trans Am with a front plate, they always have those plastic inserts with the Vette, or Trans Am symbol. So I've been without mine for about 3 months, and so far no problems.

redline revs,
do you have more pics of your car? especially from the side. I want to see a better angle on those wheels. Thanks-

I also removed my front plate because it looks so much better without one. I just have to watch out when I drive to work in San Francisco. If I get a parking ticket in the city with no front plate it's $100. Stupid a$$ SF law that started this year.

I know in Ohio you gotta have both plates. Its so bad that on my old Accord(my 88 I used to have) right before I sold it my plates(i admit looked crappy(rusty)) but when I sold my Old Accord I threw out the plates. Ohio so ticky that I'm sure you guys have seen what i call those "lisence plate tint protectors"(they're real dark and go over the plates to protect them but 1/2 the time you can't read the plates ) anyhow my one friend with where i used to work had it on his Accord. Not only he got fined 100 bucks but they made him right then and there take it off.

I took my front license plate off a previous car and got a fix-it ticket. He asked why I didn't have a front plate, and I told him (the truth)--a guy had backed into me with a trailer hitch and punched thru the plate and bent the license bracket. I had the replacements, but hadn't gotten around to putting them on (probably never would have if not for the fix-it).

Went to traffice school last weekend and asked about front plates. The instructor said that California had softened a bit on front plates--the official word, according to him, is that you are responsible for front plates only if they come that way. That doesn't make much sense, since you always get plates in pairs.

I live in Washington D.C. & you most have 2 plates displayed on the car. Like sundance_ gold says watch out for meter maids the real name is parking enforcement. They will get you if the car is parked on the street. They just hired about 150 new people & alot are going to work late night & early mourning hours.
The reason alot of people that live in D.C. register the car in Maryland & Virgina but park on D.C. streets all the time.
Alot of nieghbor hoods complain about this problem like mine.
When you have large apartment buildings around single family homes you have this problem. Parking Enforcement will get you before the police will about tags.

That was the first time in 30 years of driving i got a warning. I never get a break. He got me at 87 in a 65 on the way to the CART race at Laguna Seca. Instant on, my V1 went nuts and there he was hiding. I told him truthfully that i speeded up to get around a pickup with a couch that was loose and hogging the left lane. Fortunately he had seen the pickup.
