Friggin' Valve Spring Compressors

I can't do a forum search on my stupid phone, so...

What type/brand of valve spring compressors do I need to get my old valves off?

I've tried two different ones that are the screw-type, but I can't get them around the springs!

To get them off use a dead blow hammer and tap/hit on the valve springs with it. It will pop the retaining clips out and you will be able to remove them.

To install them, I bought mine from sears, then i took a deep well socket and cut a opening on one side to gain access to the retaining clips.

Ooooh thank you, fstty! ! ! I knew I should've went to Sears or Elliot's! The auto parts shops only have that screw-type.

As an aside, I may have "recruited" a new member in my tool-hunting crusade today...

So, I've got them compressed, hit them with a hammer? On the side of the spring? When I saw those little devil-clips, I started thinking maybe I shouldn't even try to get my valves out... I despise clips like that!

And, how could a small clip retain a spring like those for years?

To take them off you dont need the spring compressor. Just take a dead blow hammer to a socket on top of the spring/retainer and give them some light taps (rocker arms off of course)

Go to about 3:30 in to see what i mean

D'OH! Thanks Kris! Since I already bought the proper compressors, I'll try both ways for shits & giggles! I'm shocked that those clips pop off so easily!

Its far far easier to remove them just by placing the socket on top of them and giving them a few hits with a hammer. They pop right out. It will take you a min to do each head.

You're fuckin' right about those compressors! First, I need at least two more hands to get it placed right, and second, I can't squeeze it past two clicks!

So, should I hit the socket hard? I'm having no luck with that either!

I'm giving up until none of my neighbors are home. I'm sure I'm bothering them with all the noise and yelled profanities....
I must be doing something wrong, 'cause I don't see evidence of those keepers giving way.

I wasn't hitting them hard enough, and the right hammer is key too! Robert's friend Grayson helped!

Lmao, it almost looks as if the camera was held at an angle when that picture was taken.

She's running great now though and will be back in your garage tonight.

I had to make sure I got the lab bench and the "CrackBucks" cup in the picture so I could prove I wasn't holding my camera weird!

If only I had a garage, but....
THANK YOU ROBERT!!! for bringing my little gorgeous back to life!!!

We knew the valves would more than likely be bent when she informed us the belt snapped while driving. The momentum of the bottom end spinning when the cams stop turning (after the belt breaks) pretty much assures that there will be some valves protruding into at least two cylinders due to the firing order/sequence.

But in terms of physically checking them: once the valve covers are off and the rockers are loosened off of the valve itself, its just a matter of seeing which ones are still stuck in the "lifted" position. When the cam lobes are no longer touching the valves (via the rocker shaft), its obvious that all the valves should be equal in height. If you take a straight edge ruler across the tops of the valve stems and see one or more not touching the bottom of the ruler, the valve(s) is bent. Generally its the intake valve that gets bent when the belt breaks.
