Led bulbs would be your best option.

didn't even notice them to begin with so i figured i'd rather black them out so it looks better during the day.

lol true.

I say go with PIAA or Polarg 18watt bulbs, size 921. They are a real tight squeeze but they are brighter and a conventional bulb. Costs about 10 bucks a pair on ebay.

I replaced the bulbs with SMD bulbs... The only problem is that with the lens being so clear, it's just a dot of light in the center. But they are the same color as my headlights, so it looks pretty clean.

My girlfriend says, "It makes it look like a new car... you know, from the dealership." hahahaha

lol I'm running some ebay LED 168 bulbs in mine and they actually reach the road and light it up. not far enough out for me to see inside but outside you can tell.

Yea, thats the problem with LED 194 bulbs. I have a set but I took them from the road lamp to the map lights inside.
This type of LED bulb may help scatter some of the light inside the housing better:

mine are similar with the same surrounding lighting, but have a complete housing rather than the circuit board being so exposed.
