Floor Jack/Jack Stand Ratings

Hey Guys,

I just got a pretty good deal I think on a jack/stands set (Picked this up on clearance for $20 http://www.mygofer.com/shc/s/p_10175_27151_00950114000P)

My understanding is that the ratings for jacks can be less than the actual car weight, since the full weight of the car won't be on them at any given time. Is this correct? The VIN sticker says my CL weighs 4320lbs, which is a bit more than the 2 ton (4k lb) rating of this jack.

Also, anyone have any experience with this particular unit? Looks like it was also sold under the Goodyear and ACDelco brands. I'm planning on using it for basic things like tire rotations and oil changes.

The cl is closer to 3600 , and you don't ever max out a jack and or jack stands , that's unless you want a car to crush you to death .

I would not get under the car with those jack stands. These days I only use locking jack stands. They have a metal bar that slides through the extension. From personal experience, I have seen those kinds of jack stands give way and start retracting because their handle was kicked. Luckily I was the observer and we had the jack in place so the car only slipped slightly, but it was scary.

It may be fine for tire rotations, but I wouldn't get under a car supported by those style jack stands.

Also, if you plan on jacking your car often, get a heavier duty jack. I have a similar small jack to the one in the picture and it is fine for light duty or taking it out to the scene of a flat tire or something. It is not comfortable to use for lifting the car regularly. I have a heavy duty one from Costco that is my main garage jack. I think it was $89.00 but it will last years and Costco has a lifetime warranty.

Harbor freight jack stands are perfect. I've left my car on those jacks for months, and they work flawlessly.

Harbor freight's 2.5 ton low profile jack is also really good. Don't get the 2 ton or the 3 ton, as they don't lift as high.

The jack in your link sucks though, it's the small style that doesn't hold up very well.

Thanks for the tips guys. I thought I got a solid deal for $20 for everything, but it looks like these will probably be headed back to the store in exchange for something more robust.
