First time at the track last night

Went to the drags last night for the first time. I didn't do any prep to the car at all except to keep the gas tank a little less than a quarter full. I know my air filter needed cleaning (but didn't have time to do it). We arrived early so we were able to get six runs completed in less than an hour. My car is stock except for the air filter and my friend's '01 Prelude SH is also stock. I ran him four times and won all. His best was 16.13 at 87.4; mine was 15.39 at 92.0 (shown below). The elevation of the track was posted at 3075 (this was in Tucson, not Phoenix) and the temp was 63.

In one race, a modded Civic wasted me with a 14.35 at 94.5. In another, I went up against a pumped-up, older American muscle car (I didn't get a good look at it). He did a loud, smoky burn-out and based earlier runs that I saw similar cars do, I thought I was going to get slaughtered. He only ran a 17.71 at 82.9 though.

I didn't do any brake-torqueing, had A/C and VSA off. On one run, I used SportShift but it didn't make any difference. We had a lot of fun doing this. I definitely want to do more runs now. Here's the best time slip (I'm on the left).

R/T's have nothing to do with running the quater in less time...the clock doesnt start counting until you break the beams...still..its addictive huh...i ve gone twice now to my local 1/8th mile ill bet you were getting alot of wheel spin by the looks of your 60ft time...my best was .710r/t...2.200 60ft....6.203 330ft...and 9.433@76.77

no biggie most people think that......r/t's win races but they dont bring your times down...you stage, light up both staging lights, reaction time(r/t) is the time the light turns green to the time you break the beam on the outside staging light...the 1/4 mile time doesnt start until the beam is broken...to put it furthure in prospective you could have a 10 second r/t and a 15 sec 1/4 ...doesnt mean you ran the 1/4 in 5 seconds,,,still took 15 to get down the track but if your buddy in the other lane pulled a .500 perfect sportsman tree r/t and ran the 1/4 in 19.4 seconds he beat you by .01

Trackin'

That's a pretty good pass Tinman. I live very close to the track in Tucson. Would like to take the PDG there soon (before it gets too hot) If you plan on comming back down this way, drop me a line on the board, and we'll take the track over with some "Fast Class" !

Also, do you know if there will be any meets up at the Pavillions again? Would like to head up there and see some other member cars.

Yep, the wheels were spinning and hopping quite a bit on the launches. I used no finesse at all; I just floored it and went. Next time, I'll try some variations starting.

My r/t was bad on the posted slip above but I'm not even going to mention what it was on my very first run of the night... Needless to say that it only got better from there

While looking for info on the track I went to, I found a pretty good list of other tracks nationwide here:

Hey Sharkroy, I'll get in touch with you when we go again. I have another friend down there that lives close to the track as well (in Rita Ranch) and he's got a pumped '68 Camaro. It would be cool to hook you two up to trade Camaro tips/tricks. He almost joined us at the track but decided against it since he doesn't have a posi rear-end yet so he was afraid he'd end up against the wall.

"Fast Class" is a good description for our cars. I saw a new Saab and a WRX there last night but newer imports were in the minority so it would be nice to have a larger showing next time.

The guy who set up past AZ meets (GoldTypeS) has his CL up for sale and nobody else has stepped up to organize anything around here since. Somebody just needs to pick a date and then we all go with it. We are definitely due for another one!

Phx Meet

Mar 16 sounds great to me ! ( I will be out of town on the 9-12 as well, taking the PDG to San Diego & Long Beach, hope it comes back alive and well, with no hassles about window tint from the LA fuzz) . May need some general directions to the Pavillions before then. See ya there..

You need to hold the brake and rev the engine till 2k rpm. Let go of brake and floor it...sometimes its a better take off.

I don't think brake-torqueing would've helped since I'm still running stock tires and they were spinning quite a bit on the launch as it was.

I was thinking an approach to try might be to ease onto the throttle a little slower instead of just flooring it immediately. Brake-torqueing is probably best left to stickier aftermarket tires (but I'll try it on a run next time).

Couldn't agree more (it's at least worth a try)...

BTW -- when I was up in the high dessert at around 70-degrees F and 3200 feet, the power in the car (especially going up hills) was MUCH less than the power the car made at less than 1000 feet (I was using the NAVI to get the altitude along my route). I have a funny feeling that the factory plenum (resonance/tuning) is adjusted for sea level and 50-70 degrees. (IMO, I don't think the NHRA correction tables will account for the differences in altitude and temperatures in our car. I think the timing gets advanced [relative to hot temps] at cold temps *and* the "resonance" may be best at low temps.)

Good start!
