First race, and I think I beat him

I approached a light on a two lane highway. Sitting in the right lane was a fairly new bright yellow Pontiac (not sure what it was). It had dual exhaust and decked out sports trim. My heart was pounding at the opportuity to go for it.

I looked over at him and he was smoking a butt with his hand out the window, gently reving his car. It was a deep throaty sound and sounded fast. I said, why not have some fun, I've got 1900 miles on my 6 speed. We both pulled out kinda normal not knowing if we were going to race. He insisted on staying with me for the 30-50 ft. That's where I punched it (still in 1st).

I reved up to 6500 and slammed it into 2nd (with a nice churp). He was still behind me about a car length and then I dropped into 3 (at about 6500). At about 85 i backed off. For some reason he was about 60 ft behind me with his hand out the window gesturing me (like to say, I didn't know you wanted to race).

I'm not sure he was giving it his all, or he just got toasted by a 3.2 CL-S 6sp for the first time! It was kinda fun to say the least.

If you floored it and he was only behind you by 60ft, then you aint toasting him at all... thats pretty quick for a Ponitac... Imagin this, if he knew you wanna race him, and he stepped on it.... since his is a auto (i dont think current pontiac fleet have manual), once you burn out off the line, of have a shitty shift into 2nd OR 3rd... that 60ft advantage would have been gone....

6spd are quick, but you only lead him by 60ft???

I'm a little confused by your response. If it was an F-body, than it could have been a 6 speed or A4, if it was a GTP, it could only be an A4(unless pre97, they had a 5 speed).

GTPs have anything but a nice sounding exhaust, so I think it was probably an F-body, and probably wasn't racing. Just my thoughts.

Don't listen to laser 1180. 60ft is at least 3 cars, and you are just estimating and it is tough to tell when looking in your rear view mirror! Some of the supercharged Bonnevilles are fast. Anyway, good kill.

Couldn't really tell if it was 60ft or greater or what he had under the hood (modded, it certainly sounded it). One thing I do know is I took off like a bat out of hell so there's no way he can say he was just driving normal to stay up with me.

I've been driving a stick for 24 years now. I've only missed a shift once (a long time ago with my MR2). How embarrassing!!

Not sure I've seen a F-body or GTP. I know it wasn't a Bonneville It was a two door coupe (looked like cross between a GrandAM and GrandPrix). It was all decked out with sports stickers and molding. I've seen a lot of GrandAm's and GradPrix's, but not many of these. Bright yellow too, maybe that's a clue as to what this car is. If he was reving it up on the line, it could have been a stick.

Even if he wasn't racing it was fun seeing this was the first time I came close to hitting the rev limiter in both 1st and 2nd gear.

No to the Monte Carlo SS. I've seen plenty of these on the road. What ever it is, there are not many of these on the road.

So to confirm, it was not a

Monte Carlo
Grand AM
Grand Prix
Bonneville

What's left in the two door model ?
GTP
F-Body

I think your right, I don't think Pontiac uses the bright Yellow, but Chevy does. You probably should have killed him worse than that as they are only high 15 sec cars stock. Then again, he could be modded and be mid to low 15s. He would have the NA version of my motor.

Oh, I forgot.....good kill!!!

I don't think you woulda took a 2 door gtp! My guess is a grand prix. Reason why? these grand prix owners are a cocky bunch and they always seem to put umpteen stickers on their cars. I had one reving the sh*t outta his car on me and I just said it's not even worth my burnout...

I could try to find out who it was...

I see you're from Massachussetts. Was this race on Saturday? There was a dealership car show and a little cruise night afterwards. I know of one person who has a custom yellow paint job that was up there over the weekend. The car has a F1 hood as well (ram-air scoops). She is still only running stock boost though.

No, this was Monday morning (9:00am time frame) in Warwick RI. Not sure of the road but I was close to the INSKIP dealership.

I'll take a look. "GS DAVE " mentioned it may have been a F-Type or a "GTP". I know I saw advertising for an 04 Pontiac of some sort on TV recently. Does Pontiac have an 04 out this early?

Availability depends on the state. I have seen 04 GTPs on the street here in CT. A GTP is just a grand prix with the L67 motor (supercharged). The 04 Grand Prix looks like this...

The 2004s are not offered in yellow. Maybe someone got a custom paint job.

An F-body would be a trans am or camaro.

Bet it was a Sunfire. It was YELLOW so unless there was a custom paint job involved that pretty much limits it, right? You should have creamed him worse than you did. If it was a GTP it would have been a better race. Those are fast!

The only other thing I can think of is an SRT-4, but I don't think there is much confusing that, and I don't think you would've taken him that bad. I have never raced one yet so I really wouldn't know.

Nope, that wasn't it. I can't imagine a Sunfire keeping that close to me. I'll have to pay more attention next time. It was my first race so I was pumped to get on it. I wonder if it was a Chevy MonteCarlo (i think that how you spell it). Do they come hyped out in yellow?
