Extrude Honed Intake Manifolds... lots of pictures

i sent a set of intake manifolds out to extrude hone, i got the abrasive flow machine done and stage 2 porting. i only took pictures of the upper so far as i feel that is the most vital. my lowers are already hand ported, but i had a set done by extrude hone anyway to compare porting characteristics. one thing to note on the before pictures, my upper had mild porting done already. but check out the after pictures of the insides of the plenums/funnels. looks awesome, my intake tract is opened up so much more, i need a bigger throttle body bore now.

I plan on boring out the throttle body soon. It looks really nice!

And goddamn that green paper crap I don't like those gasket at all.

I bought a Type-S IM a while ago and just recently installed it. It came off a Rick Case 3.5L motor. Yeah, the intake horn was ported. I took the entire IM apart and everything was ported and polished. I thought about calling up KM but when I researched a ton of DIY's, I figured screw it and do it myself.

true, but i doubt it was sent to extrude hone, hand port and extrude hone are 2 different things.

But I'm telling you my intake horn looks exactly like yours ...I feel like my engine is suffocating because of the small TB size.

well maybe you got lucky. i only know of 1 person ever reporting to get an extrude hone done, and that post was back in like 02 or something.

seat of the pants feels like the whole powerband has shifted upwards a notch. much like adding intake/pulley. 10whp or more in areas maybe. but low-mid end torque feels new and improved.

the butt dyno for me is telling me there is more power there in the engine, but there definately could/should be more because of TB suffocation.

It definately does feel like torque was added that needed to be there.

EDIT: you're not crazy, just a happier fella

Before and after dyno's would be really nice to compare the work. Any plans of a dyno soon?

King Motorsports as in New Berlin Wisconsin, King Motorsport?

That's right down the road from me, very well respected place around here.

Photos are nice, but did you get before and after flow charts? It would be nice to know if besides looking good, they also flow better.

i went straight to extrude hone for this (www.gethoned.com), prices are on their site.

flowcharts were additonal money i felt not worth it, i'd rather spend the money on dynos. yea, i need to dyno this thing, hopefully very soon.

$861.35 to be exact which includes the shipping charges back to me, but not including the s/h i paid to send it to them.

https://acurazine.com/forums/showthread.php?t=82439

he made 236whp and 198 lb-tq, the dyno was posted after his extrude hone post. so i assume the dyno is w/ the extrude hone, and he stated the only mods to the car are aem intake and comptech headers.

GreenMachine - id honestly be suprised if your manifolds were extrude honed. i saw the pictures thinjim posted, and i dont think they were but, who knows for sure.

Regardless, the mod is dope! I need to get dynoed and tuned soon. I'll be very curious to see what the dyno will show with the Secondary plenum plates out completely or have them in and open at a certain RPM.

I've got the TypeS upper/lower IM, TB, and a custom 3" intake and I lose a ton of power in the high end because I haven't hooked up the IMRC. I'm truly surprised you feel any difference with just the IM. I would venture a guess that it's mostly in your head.

These types of mods REALLY makes me jealous. No money + college = no car mods. Hopefully in a few years i can make you guys jealous. Much props man.

lol...i took the IM plates and rail out this morning and did some more driving and there is a HUGE difference...it pulls VERY hard throughout the entire band...take the plates out and you'll know what I'm talking about.

EDIT: At the same time I installed the IM, I put the IM and TB spacers in and bypassed the coolant line that hooks up to the TB.

you took the rail out? so you have a hole in your plenum? i'm sure you are losing low end power, as those plates are there for a reason.

true they are there for a reason but I don't have a type-s motor or ecu. I noticed a difference with the IMRC hooked up and not having the plates in at all. The butt dyno is telling me she pulls harder without the plates. The engine sounds a lil louder too.

I do know this though, I need to do a dyno so I can see realistic numbers.

type s motor/ecu really has nothing to do with the effect of the IMRC. its a physical effect on the intake charge. but without an opened throttle body the ported manifold isnt going to do that much realistically. you opened up the amount of physical space the air can hold, but you didnt increase the flow going into the manifold. it's still the same. this would explain why you noticed a larger torque gain.

Gotcha.

You and I need to open our TBs soon. lol

Only thing I don't like is the VTEC engaging at a late RPM with these mods. Could I have a VTEC controller hooked up with the UniChip at the same time?

no, i didnt pay for flow numbers, though i would if i was doing a supercharger setup with a custom plenum. being n/a i dont think it matters much. but your dyno os 236/198 w/ aem cai and comptech headers, was that done w/ the extrude hone? stock throttle body? auto/6spd, basically was a vsa throttle body also present? did you do both the upper/lower?

he only had his upper done if memory serves me...it was an '01 so auto only and yes his VSA was connected and stock TB.
