(Extremely crappy) Track Results

Went to the track tonight and got in 7 runs in 80 minutes!! The results are generally piss-poor, IMHO and very inconsistent with the last time I ran my car.

Here are some of the runs.... Temp was 85-92 degrees, low humidity. I get home and watch the news to find out we had a freakin' record high of 98 today

First Run
R/T - .915
60' - 2.427
1/4 - 15.498
MPH - 88.71 (seems AWFULLY low??)

Worst Run
R/T - .973
60' - 2.409
1/4 - 15.511
MPH - 88.39

Best Run
R/T - 1.149
60' - 2.334
1/4 - 15.167
MPH - 90.10

R/T - 1.138
60' - 2.381
1/4 - 15.415
MPH - 92.19 (this is more like it!!)

R/T - .911
60' - 2.352
1/4 - 15.380
MPH - 89.24

R/T - .912
60' - 2.325
1/4 - 15.305
MPH - 89.23

R/T - .855
60' - 2.399
1/4 - 15.287
MPH - 92.72

Question #1 - Why are my trap speeds all over the freakin' place and why are they so LOW? When I went to the track last May, I made 5 runs. The ET and trap speeds were relatively consistent compared to tonight. They were as follows:

15.224 @ 92.34
15.535 @ 92.94
15.222 @ 92.05
15.027 @ 93.19
15.421 @ 93.68

The only thing that made me feel better is EVERYONE seemed to be running slow. Check these times out...
2002 Maxima SE 3.5 auto - 15.6 - 15.9!!!
1st gen Acura NSX (5spd) - 14.5 - 15.0!!!

Glad to know I'm not the only shitty driver in town!!

Sounds like fun guys! What's the elevation there? How did the Kumhos work out? Any problems w/wheel hop? What psi did you run your tires at? Nice runs by the 2002 max :P

Damn, you still havent broke into the 14 with intake and header? Man, is something wrong with your car? I'm sorry that you have that low trap speed and high ET.

Agreed. I'm not laying down $1120.00 for headers if my ET is no better than that. Hell I ran a 15.087 @ 92.02 mph on Sept. 1st here in Ohio. Temp was about 83 with high humidity. I might run today (last day of the season for this particular track.) Temps right now are in the upper 30's!!!

I hope to see 14.8.... we shall see.

Elevation is 1000 ft. No wheel hop. Excellent traction from the Kumhos - noticeably more than the stockers. My 60' times were better than the last time (by about .1) yet I'm not seeing that general .2 increase in my ETs? Tires were run at 28-30psi.

I have a ticking noise from my engine which means I need my valves adjusted which I'm planning on doing at the 30k service (now at 27k). I don't know if that's enough to make a difference but something seems wrong.

Hmmm...oddd that the traps woud be that inconsistent.

Were you having traction issues? Normally, bad traction in 1st will not hurt you trap, but if you were spinning way out to the 330, it could hurt the trap. I doubt that is the case, though...

What were the 1/8 traps on the runs?

No traction problems at all... a little spin off the line then full grip.

here are the 1/8 traps to go with the 1/4 traps:

72.74/88.71
72.56/88.39
74.47/89.24
74.25/92.19
73.21/89.23
74.35/92.72
74.03/90.10

I looked back at my runs from last May and the 1/8 traps were all 73-75mph.

That's wild. I can't think of a good reason that you got those results.

Runs 3 & 4 are the most telling (or baffling) a 15mph last 8th and then an 18mph last 8th (I'm talking differential here).

Don't want to insult here or anything, but you're not lifting/braking at the first trap cone are you???

lol... don't worry... you couldn't insult me when it comes to the track. I am a true novice as this was only my 2nd time ever. I didn't see any "cones" at the end. There is a light at what I think is the end, and I stay on it a few seconds after that, then lift. I'm assuming the "end" is where the board that puts up the time is? Not sure if anyone who knows Firebird can confirm that. At any rate, I don't think I did anything different than the last time. But out of paranoia, I'll probably stay on it a a little longer next time!

i checked all of my slips and for the most part there's a ~20mph gain from the 1/8 mile mark to the 1/4 mile. The only time it was less than 20 mph consistently was the time my headers need to be retorqued.

I'd take it back to the shop and make sure they're torquing the headers down to the correct spec.

if so, have them apply some soapy water to the exhaust system and try to find a leak. Could the problem be w/your cai?

Hmmm... they've been retorqued, but I'll keep that in mind. My 30k service should come by this December when it's nice and (relatively) chilly here in AZ. So, if a 30-40 degree temperature drop, 30k tune-up and header re-torque doesn't get me into the 14s I'm gettin' a new car! j/k
The thing that REALLY bothers me is that I don't know WHY I'm not in the 14s when everyone else is. There's so many freakin' factors to drag racing. I could care less that I'm not in the 14s, I just want to know a valid reason WHY!?!?!

As far as the CAI goes, I don't know what would be wrong with it. It's not making any funny noises or anything. I also check it regularly to make sure it's not rubbing on those bolts down there.

Well, some tracks have cones, some don't. But I think you know what I'm talking about. There are two timing lights at the end of the 1/4. One light at the 95% mark (1254') and then the 1320' light at the end of the 1/4. On some tracks I've been to, it can be decieving as far as where the last light actually is.

If you are staying on it a few seconds after even the first trap light, you're prolly OK. I ususally just bring it up to 115 or so just for grins.

Wish I could be of more help, chief...

While I know that both your car and you are capable of doing better than that, you didn't do all that bad. I ran your best et/mph numbers thru the NHRA altitude corrector at: http://users.gibralter.net/~mhoover/...on_factors.htm

It only goes down to 1200feet, so I used a cf of .99 for our times and 1.0101 for our speeds.

Your quickest run was a 15.02, and fastest run was at 93.6mph. You're within a hair of 14's, bud.

I sure wish you guys had gone to Firebird on Saturday--I had the only Japanese car there! I got beaten like a rug by some very serious old American hardware. Not many cars there, though; I could have done 20 runs if I had wanted to.

I ran a bunch of 15.0-15.3's, one 14.9, and um, well, uhhh...(ahem)..a 19.4.
Speeds were 93-95. Sixty foot times were around 2.3-2.4 sec. Had some serious wheelhop on all runs.

No, he's got a '99 or '00 Solara SE V6 5spd with the supercharger.

Well, Chuck, that makes me feel better that you're barely in the 14s!!!

If you can get your wheel hop under control I'm sure you can see some 14.5s this winter. Good luck!!
