Wind chill Outlook
National Weather Service Taunton ma
1100 PM EST Sun Jan 19 2003
...Bitterly cold wind chill readings expected Tuesday night...
A cold front will pass across southern New England Monday evening.
this will Usher in the strongest Arctic blast of air to Date this
season for southern New England. This Arctic air...Combined with
brisk Northwest winds...Will likely produce wind chills of 15 to 25
degrees below Zero for much of Interior southern New England Monday
night and early Tuesday morning. Only slight improvement in
temperatures is likely during the day Tuesday. During Tuesday
afternoon...Wind chills will likely not rise past the 5 below to 15
below Range.
Bitterly cold wind chill values between 25 and 35 degrees below Zero
are possible Tuesday night. The air temperature alone will likely
Drop to below Zero across all of southern New England back from the
immediate South coast...Cape cod and The Islands. Even downtown
Boston and Providence will likely record subzero temperatures both
Tuesday and Wednesday nights. A few spots in Southwest new
Hampshire and Northwest Massachusetts May Reach or exceed
temperatures of 15 below by daybreak Wednesday morning.
A Wind Chill Advisory May be needed for Monday night...And a wind
chill warning May need to be issued for at least Tuesday night.
When people are exposed to very cold weather for prolonged periods...
frostbite or hypothermia can Result. The wind chill Index is based
on the rate of heat loss from exposed skin caused by the combined
effects of wind and cold. As the wind increases...Heat is carried
away from the body at an accelerated rate...Driving down the body
temperature. Animals are also affected by wind chill.
Wind chill values lower than 15 below Zero can cause frostbite if
skin is exposed for 30 minutes. Frostbite can occur within 10
minutes if wind chill readings Drop lower than 30 below.
The National Weather Service issues a Wind Chill Advisory when low
temperatures and the sustained wind causes wind chills from 15 to 24
degrees below Zero for at least three hours. This can be reached...
for example...When the air temperature is 5 degrees above Zero and
the sustained wind is 18 mph. In southern New Hampshire...An
advisory is issued when the wind chill Index is between 20 and 29
degrees below Zero.
