exhaust: hks vs comptech

i have a question for all you guys about exhaust, what is the difference in gains between the hks superdrager and the comptech.

Are they both catbacks?

Can u get some type of quit tip inserts that fit the hks? I want exhaust for a little extra performance not to sound like a wannabe in a civic.

Re: exhaust: hks vs comptech

Comptech to me is a bit loud and a bit ricey in a way of it sounds.

The HKS is perfect deep through out the rpm range.

I love it...

I like the Dragers too...makes the coupe look very agressive! Both exhaust offer no gains whatsoever, but no loss in performance...just nice sound. None of them sound ricey...the Dragers have a deeper bass and sound more raw than the CTs. The Dragers take some getting used to because of the cabin sounds it produces...but you'll grow to love them.

I think the Comptechs look better with our car, and the sound is cool

Red Rider,

How do you get around smog tests with headers and exhaust? I am moving to LA in January and want to add headers and exhaust but need more info about the smog test regulations. Here in Florida we don't have smog tests.

I dunno.. personally I like it that the car is quiet w/ stock exhausts... the CTs sounded good when I first heard them... it'd be kind of an annoyance to have an exhaust after a while... I'm not changing mine b/c A) I'm cheap B) it's only 3 hp C) it's really and sometimes really loud isn't good...

I'm not Red Rider, but a fellow Californian....

Both the Comptech products (and I'm sure the HKS) are C.A.R.B. certified. C.A.R.B. = California Air Resources Board, a.k.a the smog police. Generally, vehicles built after 1974 need to pass a smog test every other year as a prerequisite to renewing the registration. The exception being if your car is less than 4 years old you get to skip the smog test requirement for registration.

Here's a quick read:

I think the HKS sounds way more like a ricey 4-banger. The Comptech is a deep rumble, but can be a bit too loud. And I think the size of the HKS tips are too large, and the Comptechs just right.

Actually I don't think any of them has a ricey sound at all. Trust me, when you live in San Jose, you hear your fair share of ricey (i.e. the ones that make duck sounds). These just add a slight addition to the bass tone to the car. The HKS has a more deep, raw sound, while the CTs have a more refined sound. One sounds like an animal awaiting to be released, the other like one waiting to prounce. The HKS does look large and does take some getting use to, but it comes down to personal preference. It's best if you can meet up with people and hear the sound from outside as well as inside before you decide on which one you really want.

I had a Greddy EXhaust on my MAxima, and this exhaust is just like it. IT is not ricey like a 4 banger at all. Not even near it. It is a deep rumple, not as raspy sounding as Comptech.

That's a nice explanation of the difference in sound, Richard.

Are there any gas mileage increases with either exhaust?

HKS' rock. Not too loud (the rumble goes away after 3000rpm anyway) and sounds perfect at VTEC. The looks are subjective...I LIKE 'EM!

dont catback, exhaust that connect directly to your catalitic converter add like 10+ horsepower? So why go for ones that add 3-4 hp and just get a custom job done while your at it, get a custom mufler to get it to the sound you want. I got a quote of like 300-400, do you guys think it worth it?

The problem with full systems here in CA is that it's extrememly hard to pass one of those at smog. Also not sure if the custom ones produce the best hp. The Greddy's I've seen, produce 10hp at like $900. $300-$400 doesn't sound too bad...but then again...quality and how does it look?

The more i hear about emisions the more i think the situation in CA is like a car enthusiest hell. If i get a custom exhaust i'll post pics, but 500 dolars for the hks or cts arent worth it to me for the small gains.

SilverBullet,
Glad to see someone put up pics with both stock and HKS on at the same time. Really lets others see what a difference there is btw the two.
Thanks.
Don't s'pose anybody has a .wav of what either of these sound like...

It is hell in CA...we got some of the strictest emissions in the country. But yea I agree, $500 is not worth it alone for the small gains, but for the sound and the look...it's definitely worth it as opposed to the stock oval exhaust.

Just wanted to thank the Hammer for giving you the info You won't have any problem with either. By the way, just today i passed someone on the freeway and i heard the sound of the exhaust at higher revs and it reminded me of why i got them in the first place, SWEEEEET
