engine surge... who gets it?
damn, one of those topics that i never seemed to read, and now i need to hear from you guys.... so how many of you guys get engine surges when the car is in idle? is it because of airconditioning? i never seem to notice if it only happens when i have it on, BUT i get it ALMOST ALL THE TIME when my car is in idle... the car just loves to jump up, as everyone can tell (too many horses under the hood

Try "Auto" with the A/C off - I'll bet it doesn't surge anymore when idling. It's probably the A/C cycling off and on. Don't let your guard down at traffic lights - keep your foot firmly on that brake so you don't eat the car in front!

Yeah, mine does it. It's very subtle though. I think they all do it. Before I bought mine I read a review someone wrote and they pointed it out and also mentioned that it only seemed to happen with the A/C.

I think it happens to everyone. The consensus seems to be that is the AC cycling on and off.

You also may be feeling the torque converter unlocking. Most modern cars have a torque converter that locks and unlocks to save gas. The torque converter unlocks if a car has been long enough at idle. The release of strain on the engine would be felt as a surge by the driver. Of course the AC compressor combined with the release of the torque converter would be a significant surge.

Every CL does it and there's nothing you can do about it. The exact cause it hard to pinpoint.
For those of you keep saying it's the A/C, you need to be more specific because if I lived in Minnesota and my CL was surging in January and you told me it was the operation of my air conditioning, I would say whatever.
Besides a very, very few people in HI, TX, FL, AZ, and CA, who's using their A/C in January?

For some strange reason, the A/C does come on even below 30 degrees (it's cold in NJ) when A/C is in "Full Auto". Since I manually turn a/c off now, my car does not surge at all.

Definitely the AC in my case. Complained to the dealer, but was written off as normal operation. I wonder if the NHTSA would like to hear about this as "unintended acceleration". It won't be a big issue until someone pins grandma to the garage wall when they don't keep their foot firmly planted on the brake pedal.

I second what rickm said. My Intrepid did the same thing. They referred to A/C as "air compressor" instead of "air conditioning". The idea is that it helps to defog the windows.

Correct on all counts. But even after I turn it off, I ocassionally get the surge. I am not accustomed to using the brake appropriately.

Yes, me too!. I have to park in a small garage so I notice the surge as I'm parking.
[now talking about older car with all manual controls for air/heat etc]:
I've always used the air conditioner *with* the heater in very cold weather (once the car warms up) -- the defogging is much better. The air conditioner works like a de-humidifier, so couple with the heater you get hot-dry air in lieu of plain old hot air.
[back to the my CL-S]
Some possible surge makers:
The radiator fan cutting in (uses power) *and* the compressor cycling.
Just some thoughts...

Heck, my 540 would increase RPMs when I turned on the headlights. After listening to the dealer tell me this was a part of their charging system, I told them "no thank you" and cashed their full refund check 90 days after buying the car.

I actually almost hit some pedestrians today because of this. I was stoped at a red light and 3 people were walking across the crosswalk and came really close to my car... probably touching it a big, right after they were out of the way the car surged forward a little bit. Im sure if it had happened when they were in front of the car they would not have been happy. I can see myself explaining to them "Um the car surges forward when the air compressor cuts on" I don't think they would have bought it. Im doubt it would have hurt them... just knocked them back or down at the worst.

Yeah, that's not cool at all. This topic was first brought up in April or May and every since then I have been conscience of the surge. To the extent, that whenever I stop at a crosswalk or at a stoplight, I press the brake down hard without even thinking. Last thing I want to do is tap a car ahead of me or scare pedestrians. Now I have it under control but I am concerned that I may forget to inform [another] driver when I let them drive my car.
I'm not sure if the surge appears to be great behind the wheel but only very minor from the exterior.

I've felt the surge but I find it hard to believe that it would ever cause the car to move, even a little bit. The couple of times I've noticed it, I never thought that the car might move forward. It's just that you feel the RPMs change and that is it.

I'll give you an example. When I'm parking into my small garage. I will use the forward motion of the car with my foot over the brake (not touching/holding it) to get it in (it is really tight). I haven't blown it yet, but I have noticed the "surge" (at times) while getting the front end close to the front of my garage. Other than that, I have no problems on the street. I wonder if some people are getting a really big push or something (I don't know).

In your situation I would recommend remembering to turn off the A/C before entering your garage.

I think someone said to set the air to lowest temp, then turn air button off to make sure air is really off. Or did I mix this up?
