Yes, our cars do have sprockets, but only one, since it's a SOHC engine. The sprockets are cam gears as MyComptechCLS noted. They adjust the cam timing to allow for better high ends or mid range HP. You can get some HP with SOHC cam gear, but it's not as much as a DOHC which allows you to adjust both the intake and exhaust lifts.

The cam is what opens the valves in your engine. They are mounted on a camshaft (imagine that) that is driven by the sprocket (I believe there are two - one on the crank, one on the camshaft).

In this picture (of a HD motorcycle camshaft), you see the sprocket on the back of the cam shaft, and the actual cams are the lobes protruding from the shaft. A car would have a cam for each valve it opens. There are two on each shaft here, as this is for one cylinder of a v-twin (one exhaust valve, one intake).

I thought one would just aplly them on and thats all. No "adjusting" necessary. Wouldn't you also have to change the timing belt?? i.e. a bigger one or could the same belt be used?

Cam sprockets do not adjust "valve lifts", they can be adjusted to advance or retard the timing of opening and closing of intake and exhaust valves! SOHC, advancing cam gear
will give you more low end power and by retarding cam gear you will increase power in high rpm range. Our engines are pretty well balanced low and high end power so would not suggest changing cam timing unless
you were all out racing then would retard cam. DOHC, allows alot more possibilities to
to adjust intake and exhaust cams. This becomes much more complex and need dyno to properly set up or could be done with GTECH but would take along time to dial in correctly! Cheers!

You can just install it on and not do anything, but then that would defeat the purpose of cam gears . You do not need a different belt. The cam gears are not the same as the Pulleys.

As Blazerbob1 said, the cam gears adjust the timing of the opening/closing of the intake/exhaust valves. My mistake. Had a TIA .
