engine problems, please read...

I just noticed something recently on my engine, a noise. I have no mods yet except springs so I Can't say it's b/c of any modifications yet. If you all could do me a huge favor and listen to your engine after the following and see if you hear a fast clicking noise, it's not the rumble of the motor but a clicking that is about 5 times or so per second.

The clicking is coming from the driver's side of the engine bay near the firewall and can only be heard when the engine is at running temperature or warmed up totally. I noticed it a few days ago. I hear it from around the place where the brake fluid input tank is. (I think that's teh brake fluid part). Anyways I think it maybe the the master brake cylinder pumping and it is a natural sound. At least I'm hoping so. I have been in a slight accident but that could barely even be considered a fender bender. Just scratches from jumping a curb and running over some bushes and reeds. (long story)

Is this sound natural for a CLS 6 speed? Do you auto guys hear it on your engines as well? Please help me out b/c I want to get everything running perfect before I do any mods and void any warranties.

I have too and complained about that to the dealer... No resolution.

I suspect it is the Emision Vapor Canister Purge Valve...

I don't think it's normal... Mine never did that. The only time it did that is after i got into an accident. I think it had something to do with the A/C compressor. Try turning off your AC and see if the noise is still there?

It's normal.

I heard 8 other CL-Ss doing it when we checked the VI switch if it worked on all our cars at a meet.

Let's see, you only have 167 posts and you think you know more than others here?

It's normal.

Mine does that too. I'm thinking mayby it's "piston slap" or possibly the valve clearance needs to be readjusted. I talked to the dealer about it, but he just gave me the old b.s. line: "Yea, they all do that...." .

Yea what else is weird is that I don't hear the sound in CL-P/TL-P only in the CLS/TLS. One guy who drove a TL-P to the track told me that he heard that exact same tickign sound in my car, and my buddies CL-S who came as well. But when we listened to his engine 'no' ticking sound.

Weird...

thanks for all the input people. I guess I'm just being paranoid. I've had an Acura Legend and listened to plenty of friend's Accord V6s and never heard anything like this before. I might go to the dealership and have them start up one for me to listen to. To make sure it's natural for it to sound this way.

Anybody out there who DOESN'T hear this ticking or chattering noise at all?????

It's normal. Before you say it's not normal, check first. Open your hood, leave the engine running at idle. Stick your head above the battery and move toward the cabin, you should heard the "tick, tick, tick" sound right at the firewall.

Alright, on my car, this clicking noise is there always. If it is like you said, on the drivers side, near the firewall, it's a relay switching on and off. Check it out. That's what it is on mine.

it should be normal.... but i dont know what kinda noise ur talking about... about half a year ago.. my actuator broke and it was making the click click noise. if u still worry about it then go to ur dealer and tel them to check ur actuator... if it s fine.. then that noise should be normal.... Mine has some noise too..

Last Kansas meet we had, I brought it up. Funny everyone else didn't hear it. LOL, but I felt better because I heard it in all of thier cars

If your at all inclinded you'll notice it. Other wise, no one else hears it...
Kinda funny. Some people just get in, turn the key and drive.
Others pay attention...

I've heard people say they think the tranny was going too, but it was no where near slipping

yeah we didn't pay attention to it saturday inferno, I was too busy trying to stay out of the drizzle... but yeah it's normal I think... I: check on Austin's TLS today and hear the same thing
if you touch a lil switch plastic thing about 3" from the driver's side front strut mounts up against teh firewall you'll feel it vibrating.. it's natural...

yeah it's hard to notice if you're not listening for it siggy.. on mine I just noticed it for the first time recently after driving my car for 3 months... never noticed it before then but I guess it's always been there...

People with more posts usually have been here much longer and know more about the car. So we rather trust them than someone with just barely over 100 posts.

U know it is weird. I do remember first noticing the ticking sound. And it wasn't when I first got the car. The tickign sound started after about 8K on the engine.

Some people say that its a relay switch, well what is it relaying?

almost all acura's/honda's do it, my friends prelude does it, my brothers cl does it, mine does it, my friends integra does it. I'm pretty sure it has somethin to do with the vtec, just dont know the technical reason. at first i thought it was a valve tick and i was gonna get heated but i found out its not

civic4982,
I'm assumming its the same noise that everyone is talking about, but I would go to the dealer & ask them to startup a new CL/TL to listen. I've had two '01 CL-S's and currently own a '03 CL-P. My sister has a Honda Accord V6. All of them make a fast ticking sound near the firewall/front strut bar on the driver's side. I asked the dealer but he had no idea. We listened to other CL/TL's and they make the same sound. Never got an explanation though.
