Engine gives up

Does anyone else wish that the engine wouldn't give when you are over red line. I'd like to make my own decision when to shift.

true.

so are you complaining about the existence of the rev limiter or are you upset that the motor doesn't continue to make decent power after the nominal redline is reached (but before the rev limiter kicks in)?

As a 6-speed the max speed for each gear should be inprinted in your head!

It is in your CLS manual...

For example, the speed at which:
1st redline at:
2nd redline at:
3rd redline at:
4th redline at:
5th redlibe at:

Read it in your manual!

No, I have a problem with the rev limiter. I can feel when the car has reached it's limit. I just don't like the drop in power when the limiter kicks in.

I am familiar with those numbers. I don't look at the gages when I am accellerating. I listen to the engine.

the drop in power at the limiter is due to the ignition and/or fuel being cut off so you don't float a valve (the camshafts are turning nearly 15k rpm at redline ) or spin a bearing reving the crap out of the motor. pistons also start breaking apart once piston speed gets too high, especially on (relatively) short stroke motors like these.

dunno why you'd have a problem with that, but feel free to bitch on.

You want to shift before you hit the redline anyway. Not because of the limiter, but because the power drops off before it hits it....

dont u want to shift as late as possible so when u shift to next gear, it'll be in vtec already or close to there?? I shift when the needle touchs red line, then like half a sec later the car actually shifts, i think i just miss the limiter everytime

Well, for you slushomatic guys that's probably true. But us 6-speeders have no problems staying in VTEC
