Engine doing alot of pinging lately...

When im cruising around with low rpm's in 3-5th gears, my enginge is pinging quite a bit. I use nothing but premium gas and with only 6k miles on the car, I wouldnt think it should ping at all. It never did when I was in Indy. Could it be happening just from the difference between the 92-93 octane in Indy and the 91 out here, or do you guys think it is something else? Maybe if I disconnect the battery to reset the cpu it would adjust to the lower octane fuel... Doesnt this car have a knock sensor or something? I thought it was supposed to happen automatically... Is anyone else having this problem? Anyone know the reason or solution?

Try locate the source of the pinging? does it happen at idle? in D5 or R or N? It could be the EVAP canister purge valve....

It happens in D5 when at the low end of the RPM range in 3rd-5th gears when pressing the accelerator to speed up...

Maybe a bad GAS, 91 is just the barely required octane. Oh, You live in the Enviornmental Nazi State....j/k

Pinging would show up most (with low octane fuel). There are a number of people in California, especially with TLS models, that have bad pinging. One member, over on the TL-board, got it to go away by adding in a little 100-octane fuel (from 76) to bump the octane up a tad. (My lash wounds have healed, but still have the scars for suggesting this in public view.)

It may just be a bad batch of gas; you might want to try another station or brand of gas. Sometimes the octane will just mask a problem in the engine.

The car has a knock sensor, but the question concerns its ability to detect the varying sounds signatures of all knocking, pinging, and detonation..

The temperature, altitude, and other factors influence the engines need for octane. The sensors and systems must be working correctly. You could try adding a few gallons of 100-octane (very expensive) and see if that helps. You should see the dealer with the information. Any information you can gather about temperature, etc -- when and if the car pings -- could help resolve an engine issue (if that turns out to be the problem).

One of the TL board members with pinging, was not helped by Keyes Acura (even though the ping would go away with a couple of gallons of the 100-octane). Perhaps you might have better luck.

IMO -- the gas we have (in CA) is junk. My car doesn’t ping. However, I notice a loss in power with the switch to eco-nazi 91-octane! (I pop a little 100-octane in the car, from time-to-time, and it seems to help boost power. (This is a rather expensive hobby...)

The "bling bling" sound you hear is most likely from too much Cash Money Millionaires. Try turning off the radio or changing the CD.

I agree that the gas is shit in Cali....although the compression ratio is high in our cars (Type-S)...10.5:1, the 91 should be enough...and I do agree that more octane can only help the performance of our cars
Maybe someone should check on the ITR forums....those guys you would think would require at least 92 with that 11.0:1 or 11.5:1 compression ratio.
