engine dilemma

my situation is i was driving on saturday and it was raining a little and as i was merging into traffic i think i sucked some water into my engine. when it happened the engine light came on and the engine shuttered for a sec then i let off the gas and then the car was normal. ever since then the car starts up normal and drives ok and it has no engine light on. only when i go above 5k rpm theres a screeching sound but still no engine light. could you tell me if my engine is toast or if the water just needs to be drained and replace the spark plugs? im taking it to the dealership later today.

take it to a shop, the dealer will rape you. and its not so easy a simply "draining" the water if that is the case. water will win a fight vs. your engine

what is making the noise? Something from the belt side? If it was raining a "little" odds are it didnt get into the motor.

now that you mention it it sounds like that screech you would hear from the belt but i dont think thats where its coming from. it was raining a little but but really wet also. my intake is pretty exposed and when i got home i shook my intake and some water drained out. along with the screech it the car starts to run a little rough but only after hitting 5k rpm.

Then id recommend making the filter so exposed that it gets that wet.

right on but that screeching sound if you're in park and you rev the motor to 5k would you still be able to hear it or is it just rolling? because if thats the case you can just rev the motor manually and hear for the sound.

no i can only hear when im rolling. theres also a minor shake to it when it starts making that sound also a little hesitation when it switches to the next gear. it revs a little higher than normal to go to the next gear after 5k.

also right now im just guessing this whole problem was caused by water. i wont really know until i take it to the shop. right now since the car drives fine and no check engine light im hoping its an easy fix.

Did you break traction at all? Ive noticed that if I break traction in the rain the check engine light sometimes flashes.

I also agree with fsttyms1 that's it's unlikely you took in enough water in from the rain. But since I don't know what your set up is like I can't say for sure. Keep in mind that some heavily boost cars even run a water injection system to prevent predetonation. So a little water getting into the intake would 'dampen' the mixture and could foul the plugs. If the plugs are fouled I would add a water eliminator to the gas and spray some directly into the intake or do the Seafoam treatment. Then change the plugs and see if that works. As for the oil, I doubt that there would be anything noticable, that is unless you really took a lot in . . . either way I would change the oil after you do the above.

Also, not sure what type of airfilter you have, but I would replace if it's a paper type or clean and reoil if it's that type.

well its gotten a little worse. i was on my way home from work the car was having problems switching into 2nd. it would feel like the car was losing power as it was trying to shift up but no lights on dash came on. so now im led to believe its a tranny problem. but theres no check engine light so i dont know what to think im just going to take it to the shop.

Are you driving around with the HBP untuned? Not smart. Than in it self could have caused your current problem. I hope everything works out for you.

well i was on my way to drop the car off and the tranny went out. i can still drive but the car strains to shift gears. luckly i have a spare tranny with 22k sitting in my apartment for just this sort of an occasion. i hope thats the only issue and they can just swap the trannys out.

hum . . . there's one more thing you might want to check out . . . the catalytic converter . . . if something’s wrong there it will cause problems similar to what you are experiencing . . especially the part about getting worse . . . if it is it'll get worse to the point of almost dying as you try to accelerate . . that's exactly what mine did as it went out.

well . . again, not sure what your exact set up is . . . but since you're boosted and not tuned that could certainly be where your problem is coming from . .

you can remove the cat - pretty easy as long as the bolts aren't too rusted - and do a test drive to find out for sure . . . it'll be a bit loud, but you'll know right away.

well . . a cat or a tune will be cheaper than an engine . . .
and if you don't already have a hi-flo cat . . . sounds like an excuse to get one.

It's pretty hard to suck up enough water to do damage to the motor if you're running an icebox too. The icebox operates like a plenum for the air filter to draw from. It's not like a AEM that works like a straw and sucks water into the motor. You definitely have another problem going on.

i have a custom intake. dont think it was water. i think it was just a coincidence that it was raining when my car started acting up.

What kind of Gas do you use? Check your O2 sensor. When you are idling, does it idle fine?

it idles fine its just that tranny has craped out so the gearing is all fucked up if driven. have no clue if the orignal sensor is on it.

So it's the tranny? I'm glad it's not the motor.
