engine being replaced
can you guys believe that my 2003 6 speed cl type s has to have its engine replaced. the car has 24k miles. and what makes matter worse is that they are making me pay for the labor which equals 2000 dollars b/c of supposed driver error anyone have a comment or similar story? I clearly think acura should pay for the whole job, but they aren't budging on the deal. They said that this problem happens bc i skipped to many gears when down shifting. (BULL!) i've had a manual trans. since i got my d/l and this is my 4th acura/honda. I am disapointed.

if i over-revved the shit out of the car i wouldn't have a problem with the issue. i dont shift the car at 3000 rpm everytime, bu ti dont abuse the car. It was weird bc the car was running fine so i thought it was just a sensor issue or somethin, but it turned out to be a major issue

was ur check-engine light on. If so they could tell what engine rpm and shifting position and speed caused ur problem. Meaning it could say 2nd gear at 70 mph at 7200rpm...meaning driver error.

if so can he ask for the technical readouts to prove that he indeed cause the problem to the motor?

Did you redline on 3rd and shift into 2nd instead of 4th? Anyway how high did you rev the engine? Do you know if they are replacing a long block, head assembly or just valves and guides? If they are replacing the heads assembly or the valves, $2000 in labor is too high. That is equivalent to about 30hr of work.

I suspect the ECU stored some freeze frame data showing 8500+ revs due to a missed shift. This would be a the only reason why they could claim user error.

they said that the engine code said that there was low compression. They didn't specically say anything about the code. The first dealership didn't even find the problem when the light was on. I am 100% positive i never misshifted when i down shifted. If anything the only thing that i can recall is not catching a gear while upshifting once or twice, but the tranny didn't engage in any gear (was in neutral). the rep said that they would more than 90% cover it, but declined a few weeks later. They took the head off and said that the valve show iit was floating or something.

Many cars that i have had in 5-speed have a disclaimer stating that the gasoline engine was not designed to holdback a car during a downshift at any RPM.

Ask them what code it was. If there was an over-rev condition, it will have a code stored. You have a right to know. On my car I had no check engine light, but the code was stored. If there was no code like that they really can't blame you, & you should take it up with Customer care. Also if your car is part of the recall, make them understand that. It could be the cause. Did you call Acura? Did you talk to the acura rep. If not, you need to do that first. The dealer cannot just make you pay for it without Acura involved first.
