Easy way to play MP3's in your car

I have a large amount of MP3's loaded on my laptop and I was suddenly stuck with an idea this morning. I have an old Sony Car Discman, and I connected the "fake" cassette tape device that I used to plug my Discman into my car's cassette player (back in the day before I had an in-dash cd player)and plug it into the headphone jack on my laptop. Bang!!! Instant sound from my laptop through my car speakers.
I have a pretty lightweight IBM Thinkpad that easily sits in my passenge seat or on the floorboard. The sound quality is pretty good. Sure, having an in-dash MP3 player would be nice, but connecting my laptop is just as easy and provides a lot more memory and disk capacity to store a lot more MP3's than most MP3 players alone. You can use a free tool like Real Jukebox to manage your playlists.
Just an idea for those of you with laptops.

Hm, or you could pay $150 for a discman that plays CDs and MP3 CDs, pretty sweet, 10 hours on one CD

I am planning on getting one.

Im sure you're laptop looks cooler and can store more songs, though.

while cool for a few days this becomes very impractical and I would bet that you will not be using this setup for long.

i think it would look way sicker to have a laptop in the car. make some graphs and charts in excel or something like that and tell ppl its an on-board comp that regulates your hp and trq! hahaha, that would be sick.

should've jsut gotten a cd burner and burned mp3s into a cd (pack of 100 for what, $30 nowadays).

that way, you don't need to have anything else in the car and still have cd quality.

Not only that (MP3s), forget video on the navi screen. You could play DVDs on the laptop and have a 15" screen to watch them on!

LarryB is right though- this setup will probably get cumbersome pretty quickly...

I've done the laptop thing a couple times on those long road trips to SoCal..

It makes sense to do it then.. but I wouldn't have that setup on a regular basis..

The sound is OK.. it is analog coming from your laptop on the headphone jack, so it is a bit muffled..

In about 5 years, almost all new cars will have some kind of digital media format player.. next year, VW is going to sell some cars with PDAs in them as a start.. pretty soon they will be fully integrated into the car..

I like this idea. My laptop is in my car anyways next to me through-out the whole trip. Why not spend an extra few minutes getting my list of MP3s flowing...

Thanks for the great idea!

I dont think you'd wanna keep your laptop in your car. Good for long trips, but not everyday driving.

I agree that the laptop isn't the "every day" solution, but it is an alternative for occassional usage.
The sound quality isn't any worse than if I throw a cassette in (which is basically never). One of these days I am going to get myself a CD-R. That will be the best and most inexpensive solution in the long run for me for taking control of my growing MP3 collection.
But for now, its "plug and play"

One thing I can confirm is this. For those of you who have seen "Fast & the Furious" it is not possible to turn your head and type on a laptop keyboard, while gunning your engine like Bo Luke, and not come close to plowing into Uncle Jessie.
Kind of like it's not possible to put on mascara (sp?) while driving in heavy traffic. Oh, wait that theory is disproven daily in Atlanta.

i saw an ad for an mp3 player (forgot what magazine) that looks like a cassette tape.

but you can even put it in your tape player and then play the mp3s from there too.

i think it's pretty expensive and is 32mb upgradable to like 64 or something.

Yes, the Duo-64 from Digisette. They're over $200 for 64MB of storage (expandable to 128MB). I’d wait for the price to come down (and just burn to CD-R in the mean-time).

WRONG buddy! :p

And its Minidisc btw.

The new MD technology, MDLP, allows up to 400 minutes on one 80 minute MD.

Oops I meant minutes not hours on the Minidisc. Though it doesn't matter because it looks like I was off on the time anyway.
