how does one justify comparing a pontiac to a Infiniti
Sigh. Both are excellent cars. The Pontiac is really a Holden Morano (you knew that though). The G35 is a Nissan Skyline (you knew that too). G35=V-6, RWD, 350Zplatform, helluva driver. GTO, V-8, RWD, helluva driver. GTO interior is of better quality that the G35 (IMO). Ponitac service blows compared to Infiniti.

I like both and it's a tough choice (for me) to decide one over the other. Infiniti the brand has less panache to me than GTO.

The GTO engine is gonna be modi-fucking-fied after a year or 2 here.

It already is. It's a LS1 so cams and heads are already available. Exhaust is probably in the works. I can see GTO's making ~400 rwhp in about 6 months with the right combo.

Maximized, phil2, seeing who's a fan here. I think the car is incredible. I'd get the Morano kits to make it more aggresive.

They have an AWD model out now with fender flares, looks more aggresive. Slap some staggered 19s on it, it would be something. The red leather is tits as is the gauges.

if it didn't have a GTO badge on it, i'm curious how many here would still be interested in it. just curious. i think it's a nice platform, but in the looks dept its just boring. part of the appeal of the original gto was a 'badass' look as well as an engine to back it up...this only has the engine and maybe a sporty interior.

I recently saw the GTO at the Baltimore motortrend car show. In the magazines it looks like an inflated Sunfire, and I was equally unimpressed with the styling. It looked like it had 15's on it, tiny wheel wells, and overall bland. Not what I was expecting with the classy styling and reputation of the GTO's of old. Wish I had that much horsepower and torque, but they really slipped on the styling.

Nor the 350Z, Mustang. Hell in many coupes, the sunroof is so small, why bother?

The aftermarket parts are allready well established as this is not a new model elsewhere. You name it, it's available.

As far as winter goes, at least in West Michigan, forget about it.

Evidently Pontiac is considering it for a later model year.

And the comment about the roof being too small??? Have you seen the car is person? It has PLENTY of room... Hell, my car's roof is much smaller in length and they got one to fit.

Just saw it at the auto show as well and you can really tell that it has been oversea's as a model for awhile. The outside looks dated already (IMO). Looks fine, not bad at all just very boring/plain. Looks like it was designed 10 years ago. Too bad.

What do you guys mean "when the aftermarket parts come out"? It's an LS1 and there's already a SHIT ton of go-fast goodies available from intake, cam, heads, forced induction, etc, etc. The only thing you would have to wait for is suspension parts.

I would get a GTO in a heartbeat if I could afford the insurance.

no one ever said it couldnt. And if you got a LS1 under the hood, then you better be able to smoke g35s.

went by the pontiac dealership on the way home tonight to see if they were there yet. They had just gotten there first one in, and it was an auto.

All the salesmen were huddled around it talking about how great it was, you know, typical salesman talk about how it's the best car ever. Anyway, it looks better in person imho, i noticed it has almost no wheel gap at all. the seats hug you pretty well, and the interior is very nice for a pontiac. I'd drive it, but i'd still take a new c5 over it for just a little more $$.

$33G (and change) without HIDs, Navi or moonroof. I couldnt justify that expenditure. I'd rather get the Ram Air Trans Am; at least that's an iconic, purpose built sports/GT car, not a glorified Monte Carlo (GTO).

yeah, cause i can see how they can see how it looks similar to a cavalier, but no ones calling it a glorified cavalier...
makes it sound like its the same car, i.e. the pontiac gtp is actually a glorified monte carlo

I went by a Pontiac dealer today. They only had one GTO on the showroom, a auto in silver.
No test drive, but I looked it over .
The body style is similar to the CL ,same door handle,no chrome around the side windows.Has a spoiler. Plain styling, but ok.
Inside was comfortable, but lacked a number of options:
Homelink, moonroof, automatic climate control, automatic mirror, heated outside mirror, heated seats.
The trunk is small because of the location of the gas tank.
The engine looks impressive, and I guess it's what brings the price to $33,000.
The dealer adds their own sticker, "adjusted market value" which raises the price an additional $2500.
With freight charges the car is priced just under $36,000.
It's a nice car,but in comparison to the CL I don't think it's worth the money.

I saw one driving this morning. Looks better in person but still bland, then again it was silver.

I was thinking the whole way home how fun that car would be to own. I mean seriously a LS1 wrapped around in a car that you can drive everyday for 30k

I think it looks like a combination of a grand prix vs. cavalier. That's sexy imo.

Car and Driver TV did a segment on the GTO and they absolutely hated it. Everything in the car is an old platform from Australia. I personally think it looks like a cavalier and a grand prix mated together. Its just like the old Goats, fast out of the box, cant handle for a damn or brake well. It falls far short there. I personally don't know why GM didnt revamped the camaro and firebirds into something spectacular. Instead their replacements were the 40k SSR and the 35k gto. I see both these cars disappearing quite fast. 3 to 5 yrs tops. Im a die hard GM guy (11 sec camaro in the garage and owned a hand full of their sport-utes) But these 2 new ideas fall way short of anything else out there that has the retro look.

Would you consider getting one?

Actually, the car handles very well for its weight.

However, braking is piss poor. Not surprising, considering it's a 3800lbs porker.

They could have created a detuned, restyled version of the upcoming C6 AND consulted with Honda about what type of interior plastic parts to use. Decent plastics and HIDs would go a long way IMO. $.02

A quick GTO story. Sherman, set the wayback machine for 1969.

A very slightly used navy blue Pontiac GTO with a white interior and vinyl top. As the owner had been drafted for the foolishness in Viet Nam, he had to get rid of it, quick. It was a 1968, the first year with a rubber nose. $1,500 cash, and it was mine. That is like $20-$25,000 today. But I got it.

400 CID, 350 horsepower, and I think it was 366 ft lb of torque. Awesome. Gasoline pig though. I added a hood tach to it. cool car for a 17 year old. I also added hood locks.

A supervisor I worked with had a HO firebird, and was into racing, but newly married, and the wife was pregnent. Remember, we're going back 35 years, so medical care was no where near as advanced as today. Sam was suprised when he had triplets, not just one child. His drag racing days were immediately over.

He approached me soon after his kids were born. "Will you trade me your stock carb, manifold and cam? In return, I will give you my tri-power manifold, carbs and wild camshaft?" Two nanoseconds later, I said, YOU BET!

Now in stock condition, the goat fell on its face at 5,000 rpm. We did the swap, no small job in just one afternoon, it was a lot of work. I now had a GTO that revved strong to 7,000 rpm, and all the gain was ABOVE 5,000 r's. Awsome. He even through in his racing slicks and rims for free. What a deal.

Well, it was eventually repaired, but this mod lasted less than 18 hours before disaster struck. As a temporary measure, we had to modify the single inlet fuel line to feed three carbs with rubber hoses and gearclamps to secure them. Apparently, we didn't tighten one gear clamp enough. What mystifies me to this day, was we did the swap 25 miles from my home, and the trip home went fine.

I go to jr. college the next day, and get prepared to turn onto the main road three blocks away, waiting for traffic. Now the 68 GTO had the first turned up rear hood that hid the windshield wipers. I'ma sitting there waiting for traffic, and I see this about 8 inch flame appear in the wiper gap. Alarmed, I stop the car, and pop the hood. SHIT! IT"S LOCKED! And my hood lock keys are not on my keychain!

So, I sprint home (remember, I was 17 or 18, so pretty quick.) Bust into the house, grab the keys, and don't even reply to my bewildered Mom. Get back to the car, the hood tach is melted, and the car is merrily in flames. I do the locks, open the hood, and wow, what a mess. Lucky for me, a guy pulls over and has a fire extinguisher, and puts out the fire. Being dumb, stupid, young and overwhealmed, I at least thanked the guy but didn't event think to offer to recharge his extinguisher because I was so devistated.

Surveying the damage, melted hood tach, hood needs to be repainted, wiring harnesses under the hood melted, but the crowning dagger in the heart, was the carbs were made of die cast zinc, but steel screws held them together. Different coefficients of expansion, so every top plate of the carbs were cracked around every screw, so these things were toast.

To add insult to injury, all of the GM parts people union went on strike the very same morning this happened, and I could not obtain one replacement part from GM for over 3 months. Very frustrating. Had to buy a $50 beater, just to get around. But eventually, everything got put back to normal.

Everyone gets shit on at least one time in life, I guess.
