Double Clutch

What's double clutching? isn't it to synchro the gears? Why would you need to do it if you have built in synchros? What're the advantages?

I just read someone saying something about it in the Race forum and dind't know what it was...

I believe that is when your like in gear and cruising along or racing, then you step on the clutch again wihtout shifting so your rpms shoot up...

lol. not really peiq. dc is when you do a shift that requires you to press the clutch in twice. first to shift from gear x to neutral, then again to shift from gear x to x-1 or x-2. in between you "blip" the gas to match revs of the lower gear. though it's not necessary in modern cars, ppl like me do it because i) it eases the job the syncros perform, ii) it prevents the "lurch" the car experiences when you downshift if you have successfully matched revs, iii) it's fun.

to reiterate, the process is: driving in 3rd, press clutch, shift to neutral, blip throttle, press clutch, complete shift to 2nd, release clutch, floor it. whole process should be done in <1 second if you get good at it.

You can do it in both. Try it while going 1>2>3....you'll see the shifter slides MUCH more smoothly into gear. It's alot of work. I usually only do it when i'm just "sunday" driving.

oh, dc is also really helpful you're pulling up to a red light, and it turns green just before you stop. in that situation, you're probably in a higher gear from when you were going faster, and you're expecting to come to a stop and then shift back into first to wait for the light to change.

but if the light changes just as you're about to stop, often you're at the speed where you're not going fast enough for 2nd gear (ie, you'll have to give a lot of gas and not get a lot of pickup), but shifting into 1st is difficult because the gearbox doesn't let you. in that situation, you do a dc, and the added revs will let the stick slide into first w/ no problems, and you're on your way. keep in mind that you should only be going back into first when you're barely moving.

also, this might not apply to more powerful cars (like the cl-s) since even in 2nd gear you may have ample power to pull away fast from a near standstill. but in my tercel i need to be in first in that situation.

Double clutching is not needed in a modern manual with synchronizers. Just shift. Driven manuals for a long long time. Never double clutched never needed to.

Only the older trucks etc. needed double-clutching... it serves no purpose now!

You'd rather try clutchless shifting... helps a lot while drag-racing. You will find that 'magic' RPM where you can shift gears when the synchros line up naturally.

you people are mixing up heel toe shifting and double clutching. double clutching is to help syncros into 1st but you dont need to do it anymore so dont worry. people, do your research before you post.

On our cars you don't need to do it.

The first sports car I had was a (very) used Sunbeam Alpine. All the synchros were shot, had to double clutch every gear up and down. I got really good at it after a while, couldn't stand the sound of those grinding gears, and could shift faster while double clutching than anyone else without.

Ah yes, the joys of British sports cars -- thank goodness they're mostly gone.
