It's kinda funny to hear you say this since what you did was exactly what I did a few weeks ago. My 01 CLS would lock itself about half the times, as soon as I started it but it stopped doing that after I replaced it with the Costco battery. lol

Mine only does the automatic locking when I'm in Oakland :-D No seriously, I think I might have some electrical problems. Its been locking recently and I don't remember it doing that before.

battery is probably going low

It is a sign your battery is going low. maybe it is like one of those indicators that says "oil change due" except your car goes haywire when the battery is dying.

I would check the battery. I thought my car had electrical problems too, until I bought a new battery from costco and put it in.. and everything cleared up.
