you cannot downplay the badassness of teh supra though.

it owns the gn on looks, handling and chick magnetism. plus they are quicker and faster than 99.999999999% of vehicles on the road.

No shit, sherlock. Of course it was a bad run. Does that mean that it will ALWAYS be like that video? Of course not.

My point was that a GN can have just as many problems hooking up as a Supra at the track, IRS or not.

Obviously, these are highly modified cars. Wouldn't it be common sense to think that you could put money into ANY type of suspension to make it "hook up" for drag racing?

not that many compared to GN's. but it's kind of a moot point, because the first Supra to get into the 9's was only a few years ago. GN's been doing it for many years, compared to that. Plus GN is better for launching, by design. This is a very old argument.... and I really hate to drag it out again, but Supras were really not designed for the strip, they shine at the roadcourse and top speed. I think a GN past 140 would be kinda scary, probably even past 120. That's why they had a 124 mph limiter. Whereas, I've done 180 in my Supra (and still had room - should hit close to 200 if enough road and you're crazy enough - I'm not, 180 was enough for me ) - and it was rock solid.

ok anyways, tons of fast cars out there, I think that's the point.

here's the sub-10 second IRS Supras, according to Supraforums.com:

Point made, maybe include a few more words next time. I didn't get that.

i'm not choosing sides either, just pointing out strengths and weaknesses of each car.

they are both utterly bad ass in their own way.

Matt is right. The GN was designed to have a ladder bar like rear end. They have amazing ability to hook up naturally

That GN is sweet, but I gotta side with Delobbo...the Supra is just about top dog on the highway. Top end is obscene. At the track, it's fun to watch someone beat a Supra off the line, cuz everyone there pretty well knows the Supra's just gonna reel his ass in before the quarter is up.

Although, no one is really badmouthing the GN here.

Bulldog your post reminded me of a run I had at Drag Wars in Great Lakes Dragaway (Wisconsin) back in '98... and I just so happen to have a link to the 2.5MB video..... which definitely lives up to how you described watching a Supra at the track..... This was in the semi-finals of the 13-second class (it was ok to break out by a tenth of a second, for some reason, don't know why...) I made it to the finals after this, and lost to a stinkin' AUTO Supra... I had only had the car for a few months, and was still workin on the shifting skills (first manual tranny car)... so the auto would pull ahead of me slightly each time I shifted....... dahhhh..... probably affected my trap speeds somewhat also, only ran a 111 in the vid. Since then, with 100 octane, I have got as high as 116 with just the basic mods...

delobbo at semi-finals of '98 Drag Wars, Union Grove, WI

On another note, this video is up at my new web hosting place. Supposedly it has an insane possible transfer rate, if some of you who download this could post what speeds you were getting, either PM me or post a reply.... that would be cool. Unfortunately I am only getting a transmission speed of 500-1200 kb/s here, according to THIS bandwidth test page - so I can't really see how fast this connection goes..... I appreciate any help you can provide. I already moved most of my delobbo.com site there... thanks in advance..... hmm actually I just got 140-160 kb/s downloading from there..... not bad. (this rate is not the same as the transmission speed I mentioned above, this is like the download speed...)

ps. incidentally, in case anyone's looking for web hosting solutions, it's only $20/month for 1GB of space, unlimited email and accounts, lots of other stuff (forum, PERL, FTP, pretty much everything you would need) - 500MB is $15 a month...

Nice run! That's exactly what I'm talkin' about!! I love the guy screamin', "top end, baby...top end!" That was a no-joke bucket beatin' you off the line, though. It's such a shame to have an auto at the track, but some cats with auto Supras are crazy consistent, and quick as shit!

I might be goin' to the track this week with my buddy who has the Red '97.

Don't know precisely how fast the vid loaded, but it was pretty damn quick. It's about 07:00am, EDT.

When the turbo Buicks 1st came out,I had to have one.Istill have it today along with my 350Z.I had 87 GN that ran low 11's.That was ripped off and never recovered.I have a 1987 Buick GnX that only comes out when it is nice out.I have had it since it was new.It now had 6500 miles on it.I am going to hang on to it for a few.

actually it was $29k sticker back in '87, but a little while after that (after people realized how rare and bad ass they were) it was common to see them going for $45k or so...

here is a good page on GNX....... it ran 13.4 @ 104 bone stock...... just amazing for 1987...... a brand new 2003 EVO runs pretty much that time, only 16 years later!

Seems about right. I remember the dealer had an extra charge. So, another 10k just because there were so few. GNs were the fastest American cars one year. 1987?
