When I went to the track, I used my son's motorcross bike helmet. I don't think you have to worry about buying a 400-500 dollar helmet. Consider this, who needs the 400-500 dollar helmet more????
A motorcycler going down the highway at 80 mph,
a driver in a cls going 0-96 mph in about 14.5 secs on a dragstrip a few times,
a driver in a cls going 80 mph down the highway all the time.
Get a good $100 helmet and you'll be fine.

IMO and I shopped extensively for this since I also ride a Harley...
Choice for excellent helmet is either an Arai Quantum F or RR3. The comparable to that is the AGV X-Vent. Both will cost you over $400 but is worth the money. If you decide to go high end, try both the Arai & AGV. Both fit differently. To be honest, I have the Arai and love it, but tried on the AGV once and was totally impressed..
I am going to get flax for this, but if you go average, it is the Shoei. They are good helmet but nothing like the ones above. The new models for Shoei is the RF900, with the older model being the RF800. I tried numerous Shoeis and their sizing seem to be really random. I can pick up a M and is fits, then try another M and it does not. Same for the L size. Do not get the RF200 as that is the base model.
Hope that helps...

If you are JUST planning on autocrossing or doing some track days.. there is really no need to spend upwards of $500 on a helmet... in my opinion.
As long as it meets the requirements of SCCA.. you will be fine... I think they are going to Snell 95 standard soon.. so make sure the one you get is AT LEAST S95.
I got mine from RacerWholesale... http://www.racherwholesale.com
It was a G-Force M2000 helmet... $149! enough for what I need it for... (not using sweaty loaner helmets

13.99 or faster requires a helmet at an NHRA ceritifed track...and probably most tracks...you can run your car...and if you break into the 13s...your next run will require a helmet. Most motorcycle helmets are approved...

I bought a Shoei helmet so I wouldn't have to use the nasty sweaty loanger helmet when I go to auto cross events.
The helmet I got is an open faced one with no visor, and costs right at $200. It is SNELL 2000 approved which most NEW helmets should be.![Smile](https://acurazine.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)
Get this BS, the sales guy at the Motorcycle shop I went to tried to put the Dale Earnhart scare tactice on me when I opted for the cheaper open faced helmet... he was like "You know Dale Earnhart is dead today because he wore an open faced helmet" I was thinking, you gotta be shi##ing me!

If you are drag racing, most tracks won't require a helmet until you get into the 13s.
A Snell 95 rated helmet is what is required here in Houston (per NHRA), but assuming you have a street car (i.e, 11s and up), they'll let you wear pretty much any old helmet, regardless of any rating.
Unless you have a roll cage in your car, a $200+ helmet is not really needed. You could prolly find an old motorcycle helmet at a garage sale, classifieds, etc for $10-20.
For use in a car, an open face helmet would be prefferable, IMO. You will be able to hear much better out of it.

i ride an fzr 600. i have a shoei tz-1. it ran me $260, including shipping from mawonline.com. Don't get a cheap helmet. an extra $150 for a good helmet is worth your life. Aria are very nice but more expensive.

yea.. but its one thing to be racing a motorcycle.. its another to just be autocrossing... its SO RARE that you would ever come close to helmet breakdown in a CL/TL in an autoX/road course type enviornment.....
Youd have to do some serious SoloI or RoadRacing type deal... but then you would need SN2000 helmets .. and even the good motorcycle helmets wont have the necessary requirements caus I think those are M2000 standard... am I correct?
