Does addition of an amp alone help?

For those of you that have put in only an amp to increase stock system performance, did it make a significant difference?

What type did you go for?--a 4 channel amp?

And, how much power to each channel?

I don't really care about extra bass or anything like that--just a little more performance from the stock system at a reasonable cost. I know the stock speakers are crap but nobody seems to want to touch the speakers without replacing the whole system since it is a bose unit.

Thanks.

IMHO, All you're gonna do with an amp on the stock speakers is distort them and blow them.

With just a completely stock system, any song that hits relatively hard I cannot turn up past around 3/4s volume without distortion that I would fear would hurt the stock woofer* speakers.

So if you can't even run full volume with the stock setup, why would you want to boost the power to the speakers?

*they might not technically be woofers, but you know what i mean - the ones that play the low end on the stock system.

i always thought the Bose speakers are actually better than what the stock amp makes them out to b...so if that's the case, wouldn't an upgraded amp produce a better sound experience from the speakers???

Much of the time distortion comes from the head unit or receiver not being able to give the speakers the power they need at higher volumes.

RIght?

I remember way back when someone posted that just adding an amp to the stock system made it much better.

Becareful I believe that the Bose speakers run on a different ohm.....not compatible with the standard 2 or 4 ohm.

Considering there are some songs that the drum or bass line sounds like it would kill the speaker if I turned it up past 3/4 volume I don't agree.

But hey, go for it and let us know how it works.

I'm pretty sure that bose speakers are a 1 ohm load. And I'm sorry... no 5" speaker will be able to perform as well as a separate tweeter and mid. If you want performance you have to go with a mid and tweet, imo.

If you replace the stock bose amp...you need to replace the speakers...and vice versa....its not worth getting an adaptor to use the stock amp. So, live with the stock system for awhile...and save up enough money to get some quality components for the front and 6x9s for the rears and get everything re-wired to take advantage of the new system.

I'm running my 4 channel Rockford amp FROM my stock BOSE amp. i dont know how or why the guy chose to do so, but when he took the Bose amp out, it sounded shitty. The Bose amp is used as a pre-amp and sounds fucking awesome.

Yeah it makes a big difference. Make sure that you get one woth a boost knob that you can mount on the dash.

Go to the next meet and hunt somone down with an amp in the trunk.....

A/V has a ton of info on this...

Check out my sig.....

Total with install ($400) was about $1,400
