Do it yourself Header install ???

I’m running out of excuses as to why I haven’t purchased the Comptech Headers for my car yet.
Now that we have a supplier doing 999-SHIPPED, I’m pretty sure I’m going to do it.

Here’s my question:
How many have done the install themselves?

Two of my friends say they will help me do the install.
While I would NEVER attempt this by myself, my one friend is saying to let him do it and save on the 200+ install charge.
Neither of us have a lift, but he has done restorations to older muscle cars for the last 10+ years and he just put Headers on his V6 S-10 pickup.

He has seen the instruction from Comptech and assures me we can do this with basic tools, jack stands & wheel ramps.

What do you think?
Who here has done it?

I heard it could be done with patience. I think airtools would cut the time down a lot....or at least a really big breaker bar.

Not yet, I don't think. But with some bending of your own you can get them to fit.

EricS,

YES! The 6-Speed headers are available. The only change was one bend on one pipe where the tranny is. Comptech will have more available late this next week from what I hear.

Thanks
Dean

So you guys are telling me that this IS possible…huh ???

Anything special we should look out for?
Any problems or techniques that aren’t in the Comptech instructions or Helm manual?

Thanks,
Shawn S

Hey Shawn,
I'm about to do the same thing. I just got my headers! I have only been able to find one person in the faq that has done it and they only stated that you need some long extensions and the job can be done with ramps and stands. Looking at the CT instructins it looks to be a simple job and the only hard part looks to be putting on the header portion on the back side of the engine block. Removal shouldn't be diffucult because you can reach everything from above or below the car and nothing extra needs to be removed. I obviously don't have a 6 spd, but it doesnt sound as if the difference is big. I'm itching to get them on and I think I will get a friend and do it this coming weekend.

To bad your not in S.A., we could do it here and I could help and learn myself. I have done alot of work on cars from installing ypipes, water pumps, etc.. I wouldn't think it would be that hard. I got ramps and LOTS of tools too. Hehe

I don't know how hard/easy it would be on the CL-S, but I just did headers by myself on my V6 Explorer last weekend. And from that experience, I would just pay someonw to do it. Or bribe someone into doing it for you.

Scalbert, are you taking off your headers? If so, why?

If you plan on selling them, let me know and I may be interested in purchasing them. How much for you to install on my TL-S?

Well, I’ll just be an extra set of helping hands on install day.
My friend is the one who’s “good with tools”.

The only payment he requested was two cases of Molson Ice which will be delivered and/or consumed AFTER the install.

I'm getting a 6-Speed, so no need to leave them on the car. After I get the 6-Speed I need to determine if it is worthwhile to modify them to fit or just sell and re-purchase them.

I'll make a post if they are going to be available.

Yeah...all you need are jack stands (ramps are preferable) and some sockets....a mini torque wrench is a good idea when you install them as well....air guns will make it easier, but they arent a must....just get a breaker bar....also you might wanna climb on top of the motor to get to the rear 3 pipes......

shawn,
so as of today, have you done it yet? I am about to do the install myself this weekend. Any tips or things to watch out for? Thanks.

Holy old thread Batman….

Yes my headers have been on since shortly after this was posted…THREE YEARS AGO

The install went fine. Me and two friends did it in about 2-3 hours.
Comptech’s pretty much bolt right up without a problem.
If you’re NOT using Comptech’s, there are a variety of fit up problems that people have come across.
