From what i learned (many yrs ago) if you set the park break, before putting the shifter in park, it takes all the presure off the tranny. I dont know if it is true.. but anything will help our trannies.

I sure do! One time my dad left his Audi in neutral and it rolled into the neighbors yard. No damage but the neighbor laughed his arse off. Never let my poor dad life it down! Then the guy got an Audi similar to my dad's and they both had more trouble with it than and GM make known to mankind.

Never...

I only used it when I had a stick. I have never set the parking brake on an automatic. It seems like they use to call it an emergency brake, so I always thought it was just for emergencies.

ALWAYS!!!! I do as posted above. I put my car in neutral while pushing down on the regulare brake. I engage the parking brake, and then let off the regular brake. The car will always move!!!! Then when the parking brake has a hold of my car, I put it in park. If you don't do this, there will be times when you have a REAL hard taking the car out of park. It's that little bit of movement that locks up the gears. Not good for a tranny that already has inherent (sp) problems.

No parking brake on a level surface, just park.

On an incline, I do what AztecRol describes.

YES you must do what aztecrol says

That is the best way to do it, yet my stinking mother doesnt do it, on flat surfaces, she leaves the e brake off damn her

Nick

P.S. Thats why I never let her drive my car, my keys are hidden.

I always do.

The foot brake on my taurus has a e-brake which is harder to
push, which I prefer. It feels like I'm claiming my spot or
something when I e-brake.

The e-brake is soft enough on my CL that sometimes I accidentally engage it - a light tap will do.
(No, i've never hit it while driving or anything)

Always. Driving an auto or manual, doesn't matter.

hmm this is new...i never knew this. so the proper method of setting a parking brake is while holding down the normal break, shift your car into neutral, step on the parking break, let go of everything and then once the car stops moving, shift into park? is this correct? wow...i never knew this...thanks guys!

I am boycotting my parking brake. A "real" parking brake is a lever on the console. Not some stupid pedal on the floor to push with your left foot. The only thing that should get pushed with your left foot in a car is either the clutch or the high beam in my ol' Pontiac!

The Mercedes Parking Brake has always been a foot pedal..

Okay..so you hold onto your normal brake...shift into N...set parking brake..let go of normal brake..and shift into P? shouldn't the R want to make the car go into reverse if you don't do this fast enough? it won't move...but won't be put stress onto the parking brake? should you hold onto the brake after again then put it into Park?

Would you rather put stress on the parking brake or the transmission? Guess which one costs $2500 to replace. Once I release the brakes with the transmission in neutral, the car rolls a little until the parking brake catches. I've never had it move again as I go through reverse on the way to park.

I don't know the exact amount but I heard ours were around $2500. Maybe that was a rebuild.
