didn't pass state inspection

My dealer wouldn't pass my car for PA state inspection because I have my fog lights wired so they can be turned on independently of the headlights.

so for those of you looking to rewire your aux. lights, you'll have to put it back as is (at least if you live in PA) for inspection.

Apparently in PA the fog's have to turn off when the high beams come on, and can only be on when the low beams are on. Pretty f'n stupid if you ask me.

Can you put in a sneak/bypass relay w/switch to allow 2 modes of operation ("pass the test mode"/"enjoy your ride mode")

not a bad idea. They did tell me if i wanted to stop by and rewire it on their lot they didn't care, then they would re-inspect it tomorrow when they give me a new driver's side seat frame. (a whole nother story...)

Take it somewhere other than the dealer!

There are tons of places that don't know how it was "originally" wired. Screw the dealer, take it somewhere else.

Our driving lights stay on when the high beams are on so it shouldn't make a differnce. Are you talking about a 2001 CL?

True "fog" lights are supposed to on come on only when the parking and/or low beams are on. They should go out when the high beams are on.

Take you car somewhere else for the inspection, you may get away with it as is.

Yeah, a local garage passed it last year. I just thought i'd let the dealer inspect it since they informed me they do state inspections for free. And I am saving up for my wedding/honeymoon to JAMACIA so every little $$ saved helps!

MOst states only allow two sets of lights to be on at one time. If the high beams go on, the low beams go off; if the highs and lows are on, the fogs come off. I will be surprised if this gets by most inspectors where this is illegal. The one thing everybody checks is the lights and the horn... better re-wire them annually - kind of like half of us and remounting our license plates...

With my 92 Maxima I could pull back on the high beam switch and get high beams and lows on and could also turn on the driving lights too!

That's fine, if the "driving lights" are just that... and not "fog" lights.

Just pull the fuse on the fogs and screw 'em. What doesn't work can't be tested! Fogs aren't mandatory.

you live in macungie? i live in bethlehem, near allentown.

this is like 6 degrees to the next cl owner!

there's a pa law that says that when highs are on, then fogs must be off...there's another law that says when driving lights are on, lows and highs are off...but no one differentiates between driving and fog lights anymore, so just the fog law stands. then there's the aux. lights law, where it says you can only have 4 main lights on (not counting corners and signals)...i saw a guy get pulled over at musikfest last year for having 6 aux. lights on his redneck pickup (you know how those rednecks are).

kinda makes sense, 'cuz if it's foggy out you'd be diminishing the purpose of fog lights if you ahve high beams on. but yeah, go to like midas or somewhere...it won't be free (my dealer gives inspections for free but i don't go to them 'cuz they treat shit better than me), but it's only $20 or so.

I take mine to Reading Acura too. I hear the head mechanic is a bit shady... They tried to pull a fast one on my mother with her 1990 Legend. There was a rust spot on the frame. They said part of it needed to be replaced... Took it to Sunocco and they said it was nothign to worry about. That was three years ago. Car still runs fine.

Yeah that guy is an A$$. When i took my CL-S in b/c i thought i had tranny problems, he test drove it w/ me and said SS wasn't shifting correctly, so he said he would call Acura and ask if they have heard of this, but when i got my service statement it said the tranny was fine. Add Reading Acura to the "shady dealership list". By the way, any of you guys from E. Pa. have a 2001 CL-P, silver, and was at K-Mart on sunday?, Monday? in Lehigh Valley.

a meet would be great for all us local's!

well i stopped by and just took the lamps off (left all wiring intact). I don't think i could have just pulled the fuse, because I think the PA law says "if its on your car it has to work", so even if they were still installed but couldn't be turned on i don't believe they would have passed either.???

so of all you E. PA-er's, which one of you cut me off in you silver 2001 CL pulling out of a gas station on Rt309 last night at 6PM?
I was heading N on 309 from my dealer in my green Pontiac Grand Prix Loaner car, about a mile south of 202/463 (5-points) and a silver CL floored it to pull out on 309!
I guess you can do that w/260HP!!

I'm on Route 222 alot. My hours lately are pretty horrible, so I'm comming home at a different time every day of the week. I bought the car at Lehigh Valley. Does LV give loaner cars? I heard they do. If Reading is shady maybe I'll drive an hour and take it there for something major.
Speaking of trannys (trannies?), I notive a bit of hesitation every now and then. Nothing major just a tiny bit. However, I think I might be used to that Century I had to drive for a week while the damage was being repaired. One thing about the Buick, it shifted very smoothly. Not bad for GM.
