Did we ever resolve if our speedo's are accurate?

Remember about a month ago we were discussing the fact that between 65-90 some of us (myself included) think our speedometers are reading fast. I believe this as since I have purchased this car, the average fast lane speed around here has increased about 5mph.

Has anyone tested their speedo's against the clock or against other cars?

I THINK THAT MY SPEEDO IS AT LEAST 5-10 OVER IN THAT RANGE. I AM GOING OUT WITH MY FRIEND IN HIS 00 TL TOMORROW FOR A COMPARISON. IT SEEMS THAT ON MY DAILY RIDE PEOPLE ARE NOW GOING FASTER THEN EVER. ALSO, DO YOU THINK THAT THE ODO IS ALSO GOING TOO FAST? ARE THEY CONNECTED?

Unless they have changed the basic technology in the past 20 years, the odo is hooked to a gear in the back of the transmission which "counts" rotations of the trans to determine how far you have gone. Basically the speedo gets it information from there but there is more "intelligence" after that point for the speedo which can allow the speedo to be wrong eventhough the odo might not be. If they HAVE changed the way these things get their date recently then I'm all wet and have no idea what I am talking about..

Please let me know what you find out. I am really currious about this and suspect we are all going about 10 mph slowing than we think we are.

The speedo on my CL-S is spot on (within 1 mph at 80 mph). I have a 99 TL where the speedo is off by about 5 mph at highway speeds (reads 80 mph at a true 75 mph). Easiest way to verify is with a handheld GPS, especially in California where there aren't many mile markers on the highways. I used a Garmin eMap. ( http://www.garmin.com )

Had fuel cutoff kick in at a indicated 154 mph. Electronics shut it down at 147, so there is 7 mph at these speeds. Here are results from AAA of Southren California on a rooling dyno test device:
INDICATED ACTUAL
25 24
30 29
35 34
40 39
45 43
50 48
55 53
60 58
65 63
70 68
The operator seemed to loose his hearing when I asked if he could test it at 150 mph indicated.

I don't know how useful this is but, here goes...

When I have done my GTECH testing, I've noticed that the GTECH seems to "finish" its 0.60 times just at the speedo passes about 61 mph. It is hard to keep eyes on the road, so I have had some help a few times.

I just saw an ad. in one of the mags for a GPS speedo, but the Garmin may be the same price or cheaper.

Dan, thanks for the info on the 147 mph speed limiter. I think I can assume that this is the true "limited" top speed of the car. The V-AFC may eliminate the top speed limiter, but I'm not sure of this yet.

At least the speedo is on the conservative side...
