Diagnose this problem for me

When I put the car in reverse and brake I get a humming coming from the rear. Only happens in reverse and only when I press the brake pedal.

I also have noticed what sounds like something loose in the rear. A dull clunking noise. I have nothing in the trunk that would make that noise. It happens when I go over bumps,

Any ideas?

I have no idea what the hum could be.

THe clunk may be a sway bar link. Thats what it was in my car, but I had loosened it when doing the spring install. The noise was exactly what you described though.

Yup, that's what I always tell people when they describe that clunk. I'm still baffled by the brake issue.

Gotta go find my allen wrenches.

If you have a dental pick, use it to clean out the allen key hole. I learned that the hard way. Didn't clean it out and the key wasn't going in as far as it should and stripped the hole. Had to take a air chisel to the link for about an hour to get it off. All the rust that practically welded the nut to the bolt didn't help either.

Good tip. Thanks. My Comptech sways have been on for several years now, so I'm sure the end link is nice and rusted.

Could just be the brake pads moving around. They are usually resting where they are driven when applied going forward. Whan you hit the brakes in revers they could have some slack before they are caught by the carrier. Don't know exactly what you are hearing though.

If you put the car in reverse and apply the brake, the only stress is on the tranny and the
rear brakes (front and rear - mostly front). It could be a motor-mount problem (cuz the motor rocks opposite from its usual motion).
