Dealer sues a customer for postings?
It appears that a VW dealership is suing a guy for his negative posts about their customer service. The thread seems to be growing by the minute. The part about the lawsuit kicks in on page 4. What do you guys think? I can't believe it.

I've been following this for a while and I have to say, I'm amazed at the sheer numbers of readers and exposure this has got. I tried to get the maxima guys in on it yesterday but our forum is currently almost dead with a very weak pulse. If the dealer had just not done anything the guy's claim would have died quietly, but now they've p*ssed off over 100,000 car-loving BBS users. The power of the net never ceases to amaze me...

All cars have their good points and bad points. Actually, VW's handle realy well..despite their queeks and rattles from the plasticky interior.
I've had bad experiences with Acura dealers too so the whole thing is on a level playing field.
Its all about getting the respecct that you deserve. When you buy an Acura you expect to be treated a certain way. Unfortunately, that is not the same with VW (as it seems in that post).
Luckily, the dealer I now use for service (and from whom I will buy my cars in the future) sells both Acura and VW.

Damn, that's nuts... just when my fiance was all getting into the Passat. Now we'll have to think twice. I'd never support a company that allows their dealers to sue b/c someone posted a bad experience on a bulletin board. I actually registered and posted to that thread on the VW site too. Just on page 10 alone on that topic there are people from about 10 different boards. It's amazing. The suit itself is pure BS and I think the dealer is hurting themselves more then anything......

The only problem I see that guy having is that he said he was gonna get revenge. Now if it was just a simple subjective opinion to the quality of the dealer's service, then I don't think the dealer has a case and will do much more harm to itself. But the problem here is that the language he used is gonna get him nowhere and will get him somewhere fast when he goes to court. You can't write that you're gonna get revenge on someone; it's about as good as going up to the person and threatening them.

Just a few minutes ago Jim Ellis (Or a representative) posted on the same board stating that he is retracting his lawsuit against the VW owner, looks like he finally realized the power of the Internet That VW website is still getting flooded with messages, somebody said something like 3000 views per min or hour dont remember which......

Statement from Jim Ellis Auto Dealerships 3:34 PM 11-21-2001
This morning Jimmy Ellis, Vice President of Jim Ellis Auto Dealerships ordered that the lawsuit against Mr. Mantis be dropped. He has called for a meeting with Mr Mantis and his attorney to attempt a resolution. We hope that we can resolve this issue that has been upsetting to all parties. Any comments are welcome to webmaster@jimellis.com.

It's always so easy to try the "threat"/lawsuit trick to silence vocal opponents. This stuff reminds me of bad customer service reps – they have 30 minutes to tell someone how they can’t help, but don’t have 10 minutes to fix the problem.

I read a lot about the VWs and I was thinking about a used 99 passat but after reading a lot about them I heard that they had much more problems than Acuras or hondas.. I mean over all the problems are Tranny, sunroof and a couple of other rattles and that is normal on a style change in a model but these guys only have 2 yr 24K mile warranty and VW cars have bunch more problems than ours!!
I think suing someone b/c of their internet postings is really stupid way. Instead they could have acted proactively and read these forums to gain info on common complaints and check for those during oil changes which would give you a loyal customer.. The other way just repels people from you and the car you sell!!
Just my 2 cents

That could be one of the most interesting threads I have ever read. Didn't finish reading it, but certainly intrigued to find the outcome of all that. Never a big fan of VW. My girlfriend has one and she's having all sorts of problems with it. It's a 2001.5 Passat. Don't like driving it AT ALL!!!! Ugh.....she went against my suggesstions in the beginning and is paying the piper now. Ha.....I've got quite a bargaining chip if she ever says "Men don't listen."
