Daewoo needs to get a clue...

I have now seen everything in automotive advertising. Watching the NBA finals pre-game this afternoon I see a Daewoo Leganza commercial. It has all the gratitous shots of the car, mostly interior since the exterior is so butt ugly, and it kept a large $16,995 plastered to the screen throughout most if not all of it. And then it happened.....

Those idiots had the audacity to flash across the screen in HUGE LETTERS that it is "1/3 THE PRICE OF A LEXUS" Despite the fact that I nearly choked on my drink I was able to catch a glimpse of the fine print and not only are they comparing it to a Lexus, but they're comparing it go the GS400!!!!

Why yes, a Leganza is 1/3 the price of a GS400. Hmmm... maybe I should get one of those

NOT!!!!!

This goes to the fact that the manufacturer shouldn't be making cars.... The South Koreans need to take a hint that there's no niche for their cars here in the US. The Domestic makers already try to flood the market with cheapies... DAMN HYUNDAI and DAEWOO.

This is exactly what was said about Toyota and Honda in the late 60's and early 70's.

Well, put it this way. I could really care less if there were Hyundai's and Daewoo's out there. I for one will stick with the Toyotas, Hondas and their subsidiaries. Just a while back when the whole Asian economy went south, S. Korea decided to double production of their cars hopeing to make more money. But the plain fact is that these cars aren't in demand like their Japanese counterparts. Says' law (for you economists here) doens't work in this situation. Supply doens't create it's own demand especially not in the Keyensian era. Okay enough with the smart talk The automobile industry is an Oligopoly like the defense industry, you can only have so many players before you compromise the product you are trying to push. To me, enough is enough.

i am actually glad that there are so many automakers out there struggling and having to price their cars way below the competition.

there are people out there that DO buy cars because it's inexpensive...taking market share from class leaders and keeping overpricing down.

it's a little different, but that's what lexus did to mercedes, and now lexus is starting to overprice their models, but now this is what acura is doing to all those other luxury makes.

i'd rather have a company like daewoo try and not do well than not try at all.

Even tho im korean, I have to agree south korea, can't make cars worth jack shit. if u ever go there u will realize that no one keeps a car for longer than 4 to 5 years, since it breaks down by that time.

I think the US may be the only place where an *autorepair shop* is profitable. Since places like korea and japan get rid of cars after a few years.

1/3 the price of a Lexus for 1/3 the car. Makes sense to me.

Also, regarding Kia's slogan, "Darn good cars", is that what Kia owners mutter to themselves when they see OTHER cars on the road?

In the mid to late sixites the Japanese were shipping a far inferior product to that of the US. And as the US economy started to slide, and oil prices rose (sounds familiar). These inferior Japanese products began to take hold. Of course there were many other factors. But Say's Law held then, and will probably hold true for the Koreans.

These cars aren't in demand? Off the top of my head, Honda saw a sales drop of 3% in April, while Hyundai saw a 24% increase. KIA had significant gains as well. And in the last couple of decades the balance of the "Oligopoly" has been held in check. AMC, Oldsmobile, Plymouth.

The Koreans have a long way to go. But do not make the mistake of dismissing them. They have made significant dents in this market, and will continue to do so.

How's this for 2 conflicting statements?
----------------------------------------
1. Koreans should stick with making sandals and baskets.

2. Even tho I will never buy Korean, I am glad there are just MORE car makers out there to keep the competition up. This is a win-win situation for consumers because prices come down or stay down between competitors and generally, the quality goes up.

If I wanted something cheap, I'd go for one of the GM subs. Maybe a Buick, or Pintiac. I test drove a Bonneville SSEi, and it was NICE. Big and fairly powerfull. Believe it or not, the interior quality was not at all bad. Of course the car was brand new. Give it a few years I'll bet it would be less than perfect.

YEah either they bought them out or have a controlling share in it. Another reason NOT to buy a daewoo.

In that case... I'd still go for a Buick over a Daewoo... I'm not a fan of small cars.

Not trying to be mean...but the only reason they even have an idea of how to build automobiles...is because the Japanese automakers outsourced a lot of stuff to Korean companies. For a long time, they didn't have their own motors...they were Jap motors on Korean platforms...mostly cheap mistu ones too!! Even now, they have maybe 3-4 engines of their own design.

BMW isn't large....but it has a huge cash reserve to stave off any people who would buy them out. Not to mention....BMW bought rover...sold it to Ford, but kept the best part...the Cooper division. Toyota...4th largest automaker in the world. It's a top 15-20 company in the US!!!

Actually, I can understand where he is confused. As I stated above, BMW bought Rover...sold Rover to Ford, but kept the Cooper division.
