D5 to SS and back

Is it bad for the tranny to switch between D5 to SS mode and back while the car is in motion?

NO, It is made to do that. The tranny is what it is, but that will have no effect.

Designed for it. I must do it 90 times when I drive, or when I'm sitting at a red light waiting for it to change.

I know it's supposed to change, but let's say you're going 80 in D5 amd you switch it to SS and stomp on it, is that bad?

The reason why I'm asking is because people who race say "We went from a roll and I wasn't in SS mode" If it's not bad, why not just switch to SS mode.

By shifting from SS to D5 and back, the ecu is relinquishing control (or taking it back). If my memory serves me correctly, I read that even if you activate SS during an upshift or downshift, the ecu handles that 'transaction' first then gives you control. At any rate, it all happens within milliseconds. You can't damage the transmission by going from D5 to SS at any speed, that I'm aware of. Just don't do any funky SS to Reverse shifts...then you're likely to fark it up royally!

But it sounds like your friends were 'ing you.

Think of an SS or D5 or ANYTHING ELSE on the shifter as another 'sensor' into ECU... The 'user law' states that anything 'allowed' in terms of operating the shifter should be tested & allowed for in real time. When we switch btwn ss or d5 - 'needed' tranny delays are there.... You see it especially when going from d5 do d3 all of a sudden - then you feel that bs delay of about 3-5 secs... - that is proof that they could not recover the tranny quick enough... - so if under warantee... 'stroke' it anyway you wish... but diligently.. i.e. no d5 to reverse at speed and bs like that...
