D5 - Before and after new tranny
All,
Have been lurking for a couple of months reading various posts from folks that have had to replace their transmissions. I intend to discuss the odd shifting performance on my CL-S with the dealer during my 15k service visit.
Wanted to verify that a transmission change-out is really worthwhile for those of us that do not heavily utilize the "Auto Stick" feature in our daily commute.
Does the replacement transmission fully resolve the tendency for D5 mode to hunt for the next gear and shift sluggishly?
To date, I've overcome the above problem by downshifting into D4 when the transmission appears to hesitate between shifts.
Shifting into D4 seems to greatly reduce the incidence of ill-timed shifts, but I'd like to find a more permanent solution that does not compromise fuel economy.
Thanks....

I noticed on my replacement transmission that the car shifts much better from 5 to 3 in D5 mode. There isn't that awkward shift to four first. The biggest difference I noticed is that when shifting down to second gear in sport shift mode, it is not nearly as jerky. Had mixed feelings at first, because the forceful shift was sporty, but I'm pretty convinced that this may be why the transmissions were failing. Shifts in lower gears are smoother, but a little less sporty. I'm probably overanalyzing though, because ever since I got the new transmission, I've been watching for anything to see a difference.

You really shouldn't see too much of a difference mainly b/c this is just a new tranny, not a redesigned model. If something was out of place in your tranny, however, then it might help. But, it looks now as though its a flaw in the desgin, so the new one should not help all too much.
