Cylinder misfire

I was accelerating onto the highway and I punched it (in 2nd gear) to keep ahead of a beamer who was trying to cut me off. I pushed it through 2nd and 3rd and then let off as I shifted into 4th. At that point the check engine light flashed 5 times and then went out. I drove home and checked everything out but nothing looked odd. I drove to work the next day and the check engine light flashed 5 times and stayed on (normal driving, nothing hard). I had it checked out and they told me it was "Cylinder #5 misfire". They reset the check engine light and I havn't had any trouble since then (about a month). I'm assuming that it was just something loose causing the spark to fail. Ever hear about this type of problem?

Sounds odd that all they did was reset your light and it has not come back.

The way misfire codes work is that when a misfire occurs, the ECU stores the code. So even if the misfire does not continue, the code will still be in the ECU, thus triggering the CEL and causing your motor to run rich (which is a safety mechanism the ECU does when something isn't going right, better to run rich than lean). The CEL will stay lit until the code is erased by resetting the ECU. Hope that helps.

That is not unusual for the '03 6-Speed, but the previous 5AT didn't seem to have this issue. I would chalk it up as a one time thing and let it go. If it re-occurs, change out the plugs and see if it comes back.

Probably random misfire instead of consistent. That's most likely why they only erased the code and sent you on your way.
