Custom iPod mount?

Right now I'm using one of the Belkin cupholder cradles to mount my iPod in my CL, but it looks ugly and takes up a cupholder. I've been thinking about how to do it better, has anyone tried to come up with a good mount on the CL yet?

Right now I'm thinking the best option would be to fit an ipod dock in the "not an ashtray", run the cables from the dock to the charger and (soon) a blitzsafe adapter. Any other thoughts on where to put this thing?

One example on an Explorer that I just saw on Slashdot: http://homepage.mac.com/reelmagik1/Menu1.html

That's a bit much space taken up for my liking, I'm a bit more interested in a stealthy installation.

Wow, looks nice in that custom mount. I wish I knew how to work w/ molds and fiberglass.

After talking with some people I'm thinking the paper tray between the radio and AC controls might be good. I could fit the iPod in there with no trouble, but wouldn't be able to see the controls and screen, which would suck...

I am in the same position...Blitzsafe and the idea about the ashtry is not bad. I was thinking that you could make something that could slide out of the ashtray and fold away when not in use.

I have been thinking the same thing with my iriver.

Either the paper tray or the not an ashtray.

The problem with choosing between the paper tray and the not an ashtray is that they're both problematic. At the ashtray, you can get a nice solid mount, but its real low, making it hard to see and the shifter can get in the way, too. In the paper tray, its going to be either real hard to balance or it will be laying on its back, no visibility for the controls...

I've considered a few different possibilities. Beneath the coin tray would probably work, although coin tray access would be obstructed. Running a cable under the shifter/console and into the armrest might work. But you wouldn't have easy access to the controls.

Looks like the one they did in the Hummer on Rides.
