custom exhaust
hey guys,
i'm about to get a custom exhaust made here in austin. magnaflow high flow cat and 2.5" all the way back into 2 flowmaster mufflers. any opinions? kinda skeptical because i don't want them to be ricey, but i hope it will turn out good. ideas? changes? any honest opinions would be nice.

If you are making the exhaust less restrictive, you will most likely end up with a loss of low end torque, with an increase in high rpm hp.
If you take your time and design it just right, I bet you can gain some low end torque, and still gain the hp up high.
My approach would be to have some sort of dual capacity exhaust. The exhaust will resemble the stock one now (one large pipe feeds to dual exhaust). At the dual exhaust feed you need to have it act like a single exhaust (block flow to one of the pipes). This will give your system the backpressure similar to stock, and possibly gain some more torque. As your rpms pick up, the closed pipe will open, at that point you will have a very efficient, high flowing exhaust and gain the hp.
Nissan has this set-up on their G (yea yea infiniti, whatever) and some other car.

I have Flowmasters on my CL. I love them. They have a very nice deep tone to them. I have the 60 series made for 6 cylinders. I bought the black ones to keep with the stock look and I had the shop cut off my old tips and weld them on the new mufflers. I only have the mufflers. I didn't do a full cat back. You should enjoy them.

You need to be careful putting a new exhaust on you're CL, as most will lose hp and torque, as backpressure is critical.
This is why Comptech puts the research they do into their exhaust systems and why the b-pipe is taking so long.
It is very difficult to design an exhaust for the CL that doesn't lose power. This goes for the S2000 as well.
I've seen other CL's dyno with tanabe's and Greddy's and they dynoed worse than stock.

i have heard the flowmasters, they sound nice as hell. The main question is what year is your car. If it is an 01 and up Type S then just get rid of the premuffler, leave the resonator to filter out the high pitched noises and get the highflow cat. Your piping is perfect, and you will loose low end and push your power band way too high.

doesn't need to be a true dual system. just a larger a/b pipes, so when the flap is shut at low RPM's the system will have as much flow as stock ( only one muffler will be open at this point). As rpm's pick up, the flap open, so the exhaust will now be more free flowing then stock and pick up some top end hp.
