Well, it's discontinued, and it's a coupe. Unfortunately that's not going to help it hold its value and as time passes it has no where to go but down.

It will vary from zip code to zip code, but mattg's pricing is about what I've seen locally in NY as well.... maybe a tad lower.

So if that price is such a slap in the face or you think your car is only worth that amount why you selling your CL for 20K?..

KBB is high per market conditions .. I traded a vehicle in (not an acura) and the trade-in came in more than $3k than what KBB 'suggested'.

The market is a buyer's market, NOT a sellers market (you can thank rebates/free interest/discontinued model/questionable major components on that).

ZootKing, What did you get for trade-in value on your CLS 6spd (w/ navi). If you don't mind me asking... Just curious (how many miles on it too).

The comment under your user name "forsale $20.5k" needs to be changed too

usually the dealer only gives wholesale price when trading in, and it is usually in line with KBB, sometimes you may see more if your getting screwed on the new car you may be purchasing from the said dealer.

I think the recalls have contributed to the lower resell value.

One of the reasons why my next car will be a 2-year old certified.

If I had the option to buy; i will get a used CL for sure (6-speeder of course)

Really....If you buy a brand new car for the resale value, your buying a car for the wrong reason.

Plus, trade-in values are a huge rip-off anyway. Trade-in a car and loose a couple grand in the process. Convienent...yes, but not really worth it when it comes to how much you could get selling it yourself.

Basically...you are paying the dealer to take your car. I agree...trade-in value is what it is...the lowest a dealer will pay for your car that you're willing to accept. It's not necessarily a number written in stone & it varies by market.

Afterall, dealers are in business to make money...what do people really expect?

That puts retail at around $21/22K and that's what they're selling for on Autotrader/Cars.com...dealers are selling them for an extra $1,500/$2K...

Considering the cars are now 2 years old and most had rebates when purchased...that's not bad/makes sense. Doesn't seem like depreciation is that far out of whack.

Hell, I only paid $26,900 for mine new anyhow.

Recalls, what am I missing? Looks like there are at least two recalls on the 2003 CL.

First Recall:

Make : ACURA Model : CL Year : 2003
Build Dates : 20020710 - 20020730
NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID Number : 02V226000
Manufacturer's Involved: AMERICAN HONDA MOTOR CO.
Manufacturer's Responsible for the Recall: AMERICAN HONDA MOTOR CO.
Manufacturer Campaign Number:
Component: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:ENGINE
Potential Number Of Units Affected : 17551

Summary:
ON CERTAIN MINIVANS, SEDANS, COUPES, AND SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH V6 ENGINES, A TIMING BELT TENSIONER PULLEY ON THE WATER PUMP IS MISALIGNED AND COULD CAUSE THE TIMING BELT TO CONTACT A BOLT ON THE CYLINDER HEAD. EVENTUALLY THE BELT COULD BE DAMAGED AND FAIL.
Consequence:
IF THE TIMING BELT BREAKS, THE ENGINE WILL STALL, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
Remedy:
DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE WATER PUMP AND IF IT IS ONE OF THE DEFECTIVE PUMPS, THE WATER PUMP AND TIMING BELT WILL BE REPLACED. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN AUGUST 30, 2002. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT HONDA AT 1-800-999-1009 OR ACURA AT 1-800-382-2238.
Report Initiator: MFR Vehicles Report

Second Recall

American Honda Motor Co., Inc. today announced that it will expand its existing voluntary recall of light truck models for a potential transmission defect to include certain Honda and Acura passenger cars. The voluntary action involves approximately 499,000 Honda and Acura passenger vehicles with V6 engines and 5-speed automatic transmissions. Affected models include certain 2003 and early 2004 model Accord V6 sedans and coupes, 2000-2003 and early 2004 Acura TL sedans, and 2001-2003 Acura CL coupes.

Were these recalls widely publicized as massive defects...I don't believe so.

We're talking about recalls affecting the re-sale and I'm fairly sure it was a reference to the trannies(which have NOT been recalled, unfortunately).

Every car is going to have some form of service bulletin/minor recall.

Isn't this interesting! A 2003 CL 5AT with a trans problem.
https://acurazine.com/forums/newrepl...eply&p=2235889

Seems to me that all auto reports list recalls i.e. Consumer Reports, Edmunds, and AutoTrader. It is hard to believe that the trans recall would be considered minor. It is even harder to believe that recalls have no effect on resale.

Since you're a noob, I'll be nice. Try the search button a bit more & see what a joke we all thought their 'recall' was...since it was obviously just to appease the owners of the glass trannies. If you take some time to read the Tranny sub-forum, there are several threads relating to the oil-jet 'fix'. There are also several owners who've had multiple trannies replaced in rapid succession...kinda blows the 2nd gear mumbo-jumbo from Honda out of the water...look for EricL's posts specifically...he goes into detail about the recall.

I don't think it's impossible for a recall to affect resale...BUT, in order for the resale to go south due to recalls, the general public would have to be fairly aware of the issues we have or there would have to be several recalls...which there are not.

For example: Ford Explorer & their tire recall, Audi's in the early 90's, etc.

Like I said...that is still minor...Especially since we've even discussed on this forum how much of a minimal 'fix' Honda was proposing...if it was a major repair/recall(ie:everyone got new trannies)...maybe some of us would keep our cars longer. Now that would be bad for resale, but good for us current owners.

Thanks for being sooooooo nice to a noob and pointing out my short coming. I will try to do better on my cut / paste in the future. You would think that someone that has been writing software for 30 years would know better. I would edit the original message to correct it, but that is not an option. So here's the corrected URL:

https://acurazine.com/forums/showpos...9&postcount=46

Finally, you are correct; the Honda 5AT problem is not well known in Europe. End of discussion for me. Have a nice day!

Eh...real funny

I'll make it even easier for you to understand then...How about you show me an article in any trade magazine(or online) which is widely seen by the public, ie: Consumer Reports, etc(since that would affect resale value)...that has one mention of a long term test where they bashed our car for recalls, be it DOA trannies or anything else...

Not recall related, but widely seen ...

Transmission & Driveline - Significant Problems

An occasional problem on this vehicle is failure of the Automatic Transmission. The cost to repair the Automatic Transmission is estimated at $3000.00 for a remanufactured automatic transmission and $448.50 for labor. Acura has extended the warranty on the automatic transmission and torque converter to 7 years or 100,000 miles. All prices are estimates based on $65 per flat rate hour and do not include diagnostic time or any applicable sales tax.

Good find...but Honda did a very good job of shoving the issue under the rug, unfortunately.

Maybe if it was actually made more of an issue in the media, they'd have come up with an actual fix to the problem. I had planned on keeping my 02, until the trans went out at 33K.

I had just a little over 47,000 miles. I was going to trade in for a 05 TL, but after the near insulting price they were going to give me for my trade-in, I decide to sell my CLS at carmax instead.

Originally, David McDavid of Austin was going to give me $14,000 for my CLS, but when the TL arrived and we started on the paper works, they decided to not honor that price, and only wanted to give me 12,800. Words can not describe how pissed I was.

when i went to check out the new RL a couple of days ago, the dealership was only going to give me 18,200 for my 03' CLS6 w/ nav (only 5000 miles) .... as I walked out the door when I saw that low figure, I was thinking to myself that I definitely am not going to give up my cool car for that low of a price.... no matter how nice the the RL is.

You got it right. Keep the car, you have 45,000 miles of bumper to bumper warranty you should be able to maximize. Such a great car with navi.

A little information regarding factors in the resale-value of cars, and a few links to little known publications ( no one would ever see these) that mention the Acura CL recalls.

Top resale-value cars

Exclusive: CNN/Money and Kelley Blue Book tell you the cars that hold their value best.
September 9, 2004: 2:14 PM EDT
By Peter Valdes-Dapena, CNN/Money staff writer

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - If there's one thing every car does fast, it's lose value. The average new car will lose 65 percent of its value over 5 years of normal driving.

But the 2005 vehicles featured in our photo gallery are depreciation slow-pokes, according to experts at Kelley Blue Book. They hold their value better than other 2005 models, retaining about half their value over five years.

Some vehicles retain their value better than others simply because of supply and demand.

There are a host of other factors, however, that also can affect how much you'll get for your used vehicle.

"A highly popular or desirable car with limited availability will depreciate more slowly than a car that is in sufficient supply or less desirable," said Charlie Vogelheim, executive editor of the Kelley Blue Book.

Some of the factors that can hurt a car's resale value are a design that looks dated quickly, high maintenance cost and high availability.

Some of the cars that lose value most quickly, according to KBB, are the Pontiac Aztek, Chrysler Sebring sedan and Jaguar X-type.

How to ruin your resale value

If you personalize your vehicle with after market add-ons and fancy paint, don't think you're increasing the car's value. Customizing a car will usually reduce its value.

"Sometimes we see people putting upwards of $10,000 worth of after market options and personalization into a vehicle and it's likely they'll never get it back," said Vogelheim.

Other things that can hurt resale value are garish colors, custom modifications and lack of popular options.

Don't try to save money on your new car by not getting things like power windows and door locks, cruise control or an adjustable steering wheel.

"These items don't add value to your car, but value is actually deducted if they are not there," said Vogelheim.

Other high-value options include leather interior surfaces, sun/moon roof, anti-lock brakes and a premium sound system. Also, cars with more powerful engines generally hold their value better.

When it comes to the car's wheels, spend the extra money and get something nice. Ugly wheels hurt a car's value while premium or alloy wheels can really help, said Vogelheim.

When it comes to paint colors, its best to stay conservative.

Colors like black, white and silver hold their value well. Colors like orange, green, purple and yellow will reduce your chances of getting a good price for the car later.
