cops using photo camera in their car to catch speeder

Just watched fox 5 news, and they said cops are now putting camera's to catch speeders in there car.
So bacialy all they do is chill in the car, wait for a speeder, don't do anything, and just let the camera take pictures and send them the ticket. Fooken lazy ass cops.

Everybody watch out.

That happened to me in Boston... When I moved back to indy and was changing my registration, they said I had an outstanding ticket from MA. After a week of investigating I found out that 3 days before I moved, a cop said I rolled through a stopsign in downtown Boston. They dont even have to stop you. They have frickin jackasses walking around passing out parking tickets and writing down the plates of anyone they "see" committing traffic violations. Couldnt even contest it. Too much power in their hands if you ask me...
Last I knew there was a huge debate on the subject, but I dont know what came from it.

Cameras to catch speeders and stop sign / light runners is old news. Even in America. Do you know how old that is? The good radar detectors can detect the radar used with photo radar. Driving thru Paradise Valley or Scottsdale (i forget), Arizona my old Escort went off when I approached the "police camera". Never heard this alert before but I did have time to slow down, realized it was a speed trap. Photo radar is old news, easily detected by the better detectors, costly, most don't work w/o front license plates, they do work on rental car drivers......

Every OPP squad car has a video camera to record traffic, particularly for drunk drivers and traffic stops. That camera cannot be used for speeding violations or clocking cars. And no PD has a mounted "camera-only" that can clock speeders by "seeing" you speeding or running a red light. Sorry if I misunderstood your first post.

As for cameras at the intersection that will take your picture running the light, ask our San Diego residents how long they've had to put up with this! Years....even in Kansas, they have them in a few intersections and are mailing "test warning" tickets to see if they want to go with this. I'm sure this is used all over California and other parts of the US. Speeding is not like running a red light. If you speed, I think you should be able to get away with it [most of the time] and we all speed (no excuse) but running a red light, you deserve a ticket. Aren't they $200+ (expensive) in CA?

How do you roll thru a stop sign, and a police car-mounted camera see you and send a citation in the mail without a traffic stop? I can see if a stationary video camera is being monitored by the police downtown....but not in a car. Where's the due process there?

In States where traffic violations are not a criminal offense, governments have maximum flexibility and a lot of leeway when it comes to your rights.

Who is causing these bad things like "volunteer citizens with radar guns" to happened to the occassional traffic violator? Guess who?

Speed Limits Suck. I want to hear from one person who actually drives below 55mph. I think limits of 55 need to be seriously reconsidered.

Anyone have stats on the difference in accident rates between states that have a higher and a lower speed limit and those that dont (Montana?) ?

Sorry that's your state. In my state, I see 65 and 70 mph signs all over the place. Just minutes from my place, you can put the needle on 80 with impunity and get away with around 85 knowing you can brake it down if necessary.

So what about places like in NY where they deduct points? Who do they know who's driving? I'm ok with you giving me a ticket, I'll pay it. I just dont want points off my license and my insurance to go up. That is so debatable isn't it? My cousin who looks like me could have been driving the car that fast....

Heh. It's 55 close to the city, and 65 everywhere else around here, but we can generally do 15 over with traffic. The local cops do 70 in 55 zones just to keep from causing congestion behind them.

Of course, I may do 15 over most of the time, but I do slow down near marked cars, out of respect. The old "I thought you wouldn't pull me over if I was only doing 14 over" isn't a good excuse.

Most states like Florida, they have to Visual see you speeding then turn on the Radar Gun.. Thats way in Florida its so easy to get out of a ticket.. Also there is some clear tape or a plastic holder for your tag that you can place on the tag so they can't take pictures of it... Always take there ass to court....

I hate the cops down here that actually drive the speed limit waiting for someone to pass them, especially when I'm late. I even got pulled over once for following a cop down the highway, we were both going over the speed limit, but I wasn't all up on his ass, I stayed back by a very noticeable amount. I guess he just wanted to be an ass, so he slows down to way below the speed limit and once I pass him by just going the speed limit, the dick pulls me over.

in NOVA...northern VA...u are allowed to go about 65 or 70 in a 55 and get away with it. They even came on the television about a year ago and said it. I even was going about 65 to pass a highway patrol on 95 around springfield...and nothin happened to me or the other cars that passed him......They know we have to much traffic to be going 55mph.

What needs to be stopped are stupid drivers (read senseless speeders, and street racers), along with overly aggressive drivers. If they weren't there people (read common drivers like me) wouldn't be upset enough to ask police departments to do a better job of controlling them and making the roads safer for me. Yes, I've had two speeding tickets in the last 40 years. YMMV

That might be true about the error.....but it is pretty much a must to do atleast 65 or 70 in a 55 around here. If not expect to get ran over.

Yeah, I learned not to speed on the Florida Turnpike, especially when nobody seems to be around. There's always an FHP hiding somewhere. Hopefully I win in court too, I'm fighting a ticket for 108 in a 65 in Broward, they take forever to set court dates.

TypeS dog is right, NO way in hell can u do 55 on a 55 road. Unless yo ass wants to get run over. even on the slow lane minimum is 60~65. Average is 65~80.

And ken, i know about the red light cam. being old news but using cop cars as cameras to catch speeders is totally new. its not the camera that recoreds outside the car like in COPS, but a photo radar gun mounted "inside" the car. just like the ones outside.

And i wouldn't be complaing if va/dc would allow RADAR detectors.

illegal in VA and in dc the roads are so bad its hard to go past 35mph cause of the pot holes and uneven pavement.

Give me a V1 and my ass will be happy. If it werern't for all the tech companies being around here and fairfax county, My ass would live else where.

Also there now moving more towards aireal vascar, and mounting speeding cameras on the highway. And broadcasting shit on the radio saying cops are in normal cars looking for aggressive drivers.

With the amount of traffic we get here (4th in nation) There is no way in hell you WON"T get road rage. try sitting in traffic for 2~3 hours everyday. going 3 mph for 15miles.

Damn straight speak the truth NOVA......The only reason why i think we are 4th in the nation and not 2nd anymore is cause of our metro system keeps expanding. Plus u dont have a radar....I DO thats just between me and you

Ok, yeah I can see that. If you don't have a radar detector (illegal), that would really suck what the cops are doing.

Time to move to Maryland, perhaps? Or work on the VA legislature to appeal...

Check out this bad boy. Looks like it might opperate using IR so I don't know if a jammer will work. It won't if it's on a different frequency. Anyway...

Looks very hi-tech. In other countries, they are serious about speeding in places where you aren't suppose to. But again, they allow you to drive as fast as you want, in other places.

In the US, speed devices that transmit and regulated can only operate on approved frequencies that are known and published. Shortly after, the new detection devices hit the market. Only in America....

An infrared device would be easy to detect.

1. I would NOT be too worried about any systems that are constant on systems (like a automatic photo taking system). They give a good detector plenty of warning.

As a lot of people have pointed out, the red-light runner systems have been doing this for quite a while. The West LA and surrounding area cops are giving out tons of tickets for missing front plates for this reason.

I would worry more about -- instant on LIDAR system (laser radar systems).

"We" just had a discussion about this a few days to a week ago. I got a call from one of my best friends in Northern San Diego, and he got pulled over along with fifteen other cars by a patrol car, at the end of a long road. It turns out, that they had a motorcop waiting in the bushes with a new laser radar gun, with an assistant. He would aim at each license plate, and the assistant would "spot" the same plate with a sniper scope and read off the license tag to a third police unit.

My friend who was lucky enough to NOT be cited, but who did get pulled over with the other fifteen cars in the "clump", talked about what was going on to the policeman. It seems his license was a few weeks out-of-date. So, while they towed his car away for a total of $280 (towing fees, etc), he talked to the cops there about what they were doing. He also got a good look at the crew ("laser sniper squad") as he was forced to walk home without his car.

So, the next time someone wants to know if the police are really getting way into the laser stuff, think about this story.

My friend is considering buying a "Blinder" system with new V1.
