Cops pose as construction workers to catch speeders!!!

ST. AUGUSTINE -- With his red hard hat and bright orange reflector vest, Pat Thomason looked like a road surveyor hunched over a tripod in an Interstate 95 construction zone last week.

But the scope he peered through wasn't for checking elevations -- it was a Pro Laser III speed detector. The readings he barked into his walkie-talkie weren't in degrees, inches and feet -- they were in miles per hour.

IMO, I think if you're doin' 81 in a 60 mpg construction zone with construction workers, you deserve to be pulled over, especially since they had a worker killed recently.

135 in a 55 with nobody in sight is okay, just keep the racing outside of construction zones...

I understand your concern, but there are no construction workers in danger here.
This is a FAKE “construction zone” where the cops are posing as state workers.

I know because they do this in PA all the time.
They usually don’t stand out in the middle of the road like that though.
Here they sit in a piece of construction equipment like a dump truck and shoot the RADAR out the window.
A patrol car up the road issues the ticket.

I’ve also seen cop cars parked just on the other side of those big tractors they use to cut the grass in the middle of the road.
Basically, whenever I see something sitting on the side of the road I slow down and keep an eye on the V1 display in case they’re using “INSTANT ON” radar.

Yea, it's a little shady if they aren't in real construction areas, but if it gets people to slow down in other construction areas, I can see some good. What'd they say? Something like 37 deaths in construction zones in Florida last year? Ouch. If people were sensible enough to slow down in these zones, the cops wouldn't have to resort to costumes. They've already been doing the double fine thing for years now with seemingly no real impact.

Hell yea, I'd be pissed if I got pulled over by one of these Village People, but I can't really blame them.

Setting up in a construction zone is completely understandable but setting up a 'fake' construction zone is just wrong.

Also, here in CA all fines in construction zones are 2x, I think it's 3x in AZ. So you could easily have a $500+ speeding ticket

Anyways that could be an added revenue generator for these types of speed traps...

It will help, but don’t get cocky.
If you’re cruising all alone at 80MPH and he uses “instant on”, your DEAD no matter what detector you have stuck on the dash.
This is where a detector with LONG RANGE like the V1 or 8500 will alert you as they’re clocking the people out ahead of you.
This will give you time to find the brake pedal.

Hey the cops have been doing this for years. I remember long ago in Illinois; even then they were at the actual construction sites with the crews. Sitting atop the road grader under the umbrella, a cop with a radar gun.

Me, I don't care what they wear or how they look or what they fake. Just last month in KC, I see a regular car pulled over the side of the road, hood up, flashers on. Instead of a broken-down motorist, a cop is in the backseat with radar gun always on. Fake breakdown, but fake or not, V1 was on duty; you can't fake V1.

They can't hide the radar signature no matter how hard they try. The only thing is like everyone says INSTANT ON if you are the first in line. And you will be first when nobody else slows down because nobody can recognize it as cop and you get no on-coming traffic flashing headlights and you glance once or twice and keep going [fast]. But fortunately when cops are well hidden or disguised, they tend to be less picky about using INSTANT ON and have a tendency to be trigger-happy which is to our advantage. The more speeding targets there are that don't slow down, the more clocking the cops will do. Sometimes when they are very well-hidden, they go for the ALWAYS ON look at least here in Kansas. Oh and also when they go to these extremes, they are looking for volume and not the BIG FISH so 1-3 minutes between clockings is the exception rather than the rule. Anyway, good luck to the rest of you in those kinds of States.

Don't sweat it. They're going to have to come up with something better than this. Adding laser to this does present sorta a problem and that's what I mean about good luck. Cause here in Kansas, if they have a laser party, it's pretty the ole fashion way, nothing all creative.

Another reason for me to hate cops!

I still believe that only about 2% of all police officers are actually doing the job because they want to help people.

The other 98% are doing it because they have small dicks, or were picked on as kids, and this is there way of TRYING to get back at the world.

Fuck the cops, I'm ordering a V1 ASAP.

thats fucking gay....i don't think they should be allowed to do that..unless it is already in a construction zone..not setting up a false one just to catch speeders..i speed and i admit it...but i'm a good driver and do not put others at risk...if i want to drive fast then i should be allowed to...

After work yesterday there was a special on this on the learning channel. AAA was pissed off at some towns for issueing to many tickets warrning their members not to drive in certain towns and they also gave alot of ways to get arround tickets. Some really made sense, that I have never thought of before. Those damn planes are the ones that get me. And if the cops are playing dress up, more power to them for being that gay. The construction workers also need to learn to be not so cocky and stand in the lanes of traffic when they are just talking wasting time there is usually 1 doing work and 4 supervising, I slow way down in construction areas and these morons still find ways to almost get hit. And if your from Illinois you'll know what im talking about.... I know Bobby and Abby's mom and dad can't work on ever single road in the damn state at the same time, damn that bobby. That has to be false advertising.

yeah a town near where I live is SUPER SNEAKY. their new cop car is Black so they put it on night shift and they'll park in this Doctor's office parking lot which has a line of trees to the west and if your heading east into town from the west he'll have his car lights off and the black car camoes right in with the shade(from the trees) . My friend (which i was with him) got a ticket cause of these PIGS The white cop car(which is the older one) is drove by the police chief and he knows what the hell is going on cause he'll take the black car home.(cause he lives by my grandma's and everytime i've been to her house at night(when it's getting close to dark) he always has a black car.
I get along with the police chief(he'll wave at me and ask me how i'm doing) but his under ranking cops are the ones that are butt wipes

Yeah, well the cops here in South Florida just hide their 320 HP Camaros in the friggin' woods. A radar detector is a must.

Whoa crazy. I just was watching TV, and a news preview popped up, saying something about cops posing as construction workers to crack down on speeding in construction zones. Seems they're covering it on the news tonight. I remembered seeing this thread a while back, so I just thought I'd mention it... You guys on the east coast aren't alone anymore.

I used to have a bumper sticker with the 55mph sign on it and the red line thru it and I never got pulled over by the cops either. So why would the cops pull you over for a stupid bumper sticker or a license plate?
