Considering Getting A CL-S, Advice?

Right now I have a 1997 Honda Prelude, automatic, and I am thinking about getting an '01 CL-S. I would love to get the '03 CL-S but there's no way I can afford that.

Anyone have any advice? Other cars I am considering are:

- S2000
- RSX-S
- TL-S
- 94-96 Supra TT

I am trying stay around $17-18K or so, give or take. Definitely under $20K for sure.

the only cars out of what you picked that can be had for that price is the rsx-s, tl-s, cl-s...

no way you will find any supra regardless of mileage for under 20k imo

depends on what you are looking for.

cl-s is a great car, I would take it (and did, obviously) over any of the cars you mentioned.

100% don't get an rsx-s, and I wouldn't get the supra either. Rsx is just a shitty car, supra would be out of warranty.

TL-s is great car too, just depends on the number of doors you want.

2000 S2ks can be found for under 20 too, but supra will be hard to find for under 20k. NA automatic supra maybe.

I want an S2k aswell, so thats my vote.

oh yeah, s2000 is a good choice....I would be between the cl-s and s2000...depends on if you want a pure sports car, or a semi-luxury semi-sports coupe.

Yeah, see I really like that CL-S's are more luxury/sports cars, that's definitely a huge plus in my book. Also, what about the CL-S transmission? I have heard some bad things about it, how its about as reliable as the Prelude tiptronic transmission

Some other choices are a Maxima, etc.

I absolutely love TL-S's, but I can't seem to find a Type S for $19K, I am not sure why.

BTW, about the RSX, I like the look of that car a lot. But it's still a smaller engine than what I have now, I can't imagine stepping DOWN, that would kill me. I would prefer to spend less than $17K if possible. And I have found CL-S's in that range as well. Seems like a great idea for the money.

Just a few questions, what is the stock 1/4 mile time for the CL-S? Does Acura make an OEM bodykit for it? Are there any other spoiler options?

TL-S are worth more because more people want 4 doors and TL-S came out in 2002. CL-S has been out since 2000 as a 2001 model. So they are older. Some CL-S have automatic tranny probs but there is a 100k mile warranty on it.

No OEM kit, but you can find a Versus kit fairly cheap from time to time on this board. M5 BMW spoiler is a popular option aside from the factory deal.

What part of DE are you in? Cause I was getting ready to put my 02 CLS on Autotrader for $20,500.

You guys are right, supras are going for top dollar prices. Look at this modded supra with over 100k miles going for 80k.

It better have a spanking new 'worked' engine & a single turbo for $80K.

The CLS auto trannies are absolute crap. That is why you get a 100k warranty now for it. Expect the worst with the auto. The 6-speed is great though. I would get a 2002-2003 Maxima because the resale on those things are terrible. You could probably save 2-3k on a comparably equipped Max and have a better auto tranny too (those things last forever).

I wouldn't say they're 'absolute crap'...

The percentage of tranny failures is almost nothing comapred to the number of cars built. And, it appears the majority of issues happen to the same vehicles, whether or not that's driver error...who knows.

I've had an 01 & an 02 CLS, never had any problems. Put 22K miles on the 02, the 01 had 36K...no issues.

Maybe I was a little harsh in saying that they are crap however, we all know there is a design flaw in them. I have a 96 max right now and it is by far the most reliable vehicle i've ever had. The only problem so far besides regular maintanence was an oil leak. I'm looking into the new TL and G35c and am waiting a little while to see if the new auto TL exhibits the same problems. So far, it seems okay (want auto due to heavy traffic).

Here,

It's a bit more than you want to pay, but it might just be worth it

Bought my 02... decided I needed one to mod...bought the 01 used from an aquaintance...sold the 01 after 8 mos cause the wifey wanted something diff.

Compromised, bought the 03, told the wifey we'd get something diff when the 02 is sold...which should be soon.

i like the cl-s better than my dads MB e430 sport... its the perfect mix of power and luxury... the interior is kickass, it has handeling that seems to be perfect for both a calm cruise or if youre rippen down a snakey road, and the power... mmm, plus that vtech make ALL the right noises when youre usin it. CL-S... of course as G-Unit said... we are all biased

I know this is a CL-S forum, but when I compare the car to all of the others on the market there isn't really much of a contest. But at the same time, I don't know what to do about the transmission. Are there transmission builds for the '00-'02 automatic transmissions?

The only other car that I would be looking at is the '00 S2000's.
