Comptech Flywheel Update

Guys.

Shad at Comptech sent me a replacement sensor with a 15/1000th and 20/1000th spacer. I will try these today. One thing he said was that even though the CPS 'shroud' is new to the production-car, the sensor-itself is the same between the pre-prodution and production vehicles - hence Comptech feels this is not a design flaw. He said that the flywheel expands 10% as it gets hot, however.

Now, he said that the shroud was installed by Honda because folks were breaking the sensor while putting the tranny back on. I took the sensor out of the tranny while installing it... but I did not take the shroud out. It is possible that I cracked the shroud and that eventually gave out and caused damage.

However... I fail to see how the sensor could have that much abrasive wear from a one-time crack or something on the outer protective shroud.

So... I will re-check everything and start the car tonight and will keep everyone posted.

BTW, other factors lending to the argument that this might not be a flywheel-design issue is that others have not seen this problem.

On Comptech's behalf, I should say they were patient with me and have proven their responsiveness and commitment to the customer.

Hmmm, 10% caught my attention and seems a bit high so I did some calcs...

Given the thermal expansion coefficient of Al is ~2.34e-5/deg-C (almost twice that of steel btw) and assuming linear expansion, it would have to heat up 4274 deg-C (7724 deg-F) to achieve 10% expansion. Aluminum melts at 660 deg-C so that is not possible . I doubt the flywheel ever gets more than 400 deg-C so ~1% thermal expansion is possible, but not much more. Perhaps there are other factors attributing to their expanding flywheel, either that or I forget all my engineering , it's been a while since school...

I didn't do the math, but that's what Comptech said.

Anyways... I put everything back on and the car doesn't run!! The flywheel metal extrusions are damaged and touch the new sensor... if I pull it back, the car won't start. Now... the code is DTC: 336 which means the sensor range/performance issue!! This is frustrating me again.

I hope that the sensor didn't short out and do damage to the ECU... that might be something as well.

You are telling me!!

The stock flywheel is going back with the new sensor - now if the car doesn't run properly... its quite beyond me! Looking at the Comptech flywheel when its off the car will give me some more info.

The only reason I can think of why the new sensor isn't working is because of the flywheel - its damaged somehow. Those metal extrusions are damaged (I can see the damage).

I would keep the car with the tranny off until the flywheel issue is resolved, but I need a running car at the moment.

Also, I don't know what Comptech's position is going to be now:

(a) Do they give me a replacement flywheel?
(b) Do they refund me my money?
(c) Do they do nothing?

Between (a) and (b), what should I do?

Man, this sucks!!! I am truly sorry about this; I know it is frustrating.

About the only imediate recourse is to put the stock flywheel back on and see if that works. Also, thoroughly check all electrical connections. That connector came off somehow and should be suspect.
