Comptech Clutch and Flywheel

Who's running the Comptech Clutch and Flywheel combo? How many miles and any problems?

I got a call from the dealer that's replacing the rear main seal on my motor and I've got some hot spots on the clutch and flywheel. They've quoted me $1,100 in parts alone. At that price, I'm thinking of throwing in a Comptech unit. I've seen that other options are on the horizon but I need something now.

I've had the comptech clutch and flywheel package on for close to 10000 miles, no problems at all. No slipping, no chatter, still bites very well.

As to hot spots on the stock flywheel, When i took my stock pressure plate and flywheel off, I had evidence of hot spots as well and I didn't even have the supercharger on during the first 7500 miles. Sounds like it may just be a normal characteristic of the setup.

a new pressure plate/clutch is around 300.00 (set), flywheel is 450.00, since they already have the tranny out and flywheel, you might as well do something unless your going to put that new engine in. I'd say the stock one should be ok and last till you decide when your updating the motor.

There were 2 or 3 different people who had problems with the CT clutch/flywheel. If I'm not mistaken, I believe each of them ran their cars really hard at the track and were dumping the clutch a lot off the line.

Eh?

If you dump the stock clutch off the line a lot and that doesn't break... isn't the Comptech solution supposed to be stronger!?!?!!?

I run nearly 500hp on the car with the stock clutch and it works fine. I run about 330hp on the Comptech clutch and it broke my pressure-plate 3 times!!

Comptech doesn't provide a pressure plate as I'm sure everyone knows. When you broke the pressure plate, were you using the turbo you initially had? I've been under the impression you were. I'm sure you know turbo applications don't like lightweight flywheels and I beleive that had something to do with it.

The inertia with the heavier flywheel keeps the revs up so your not coming up on the pressure plate with all that torque, a lightweight flywheel no matter how fast a shifter you are is going to lose RPM's. Perhaps our cars would only work well with the lightweight comptech flywheel with the hp possibly below that 330 mark or perhaps it's how your turbo made power in comparision to how the SC does. I've had no problems with mine with the SC and have done my fair share of doggin it.

It's good to know that you've had no problems with the stock setup with the power your developing. That's a plus!

Good point.....
My thoughts to why the failures occur...

I suspect that due to the considerably less mass of the CT clutch/flywheel assembly, that stresses from hard launches off the line aren't being dampened like they would be with the much heavier dual-mass OEM clutch/flywheel. Is this a design flaw? Depends what the intended application was. I believe CT designed the clutch/flywheel for road course applications, not the drag-strip. However, considering the wide range of owners and how they drive their cars, IMHO, CT miscalculated what stresses the clutch/flywheel assembly would have to endure.

The Comptech clutch/flywheel was used only when I was NA... never with the previous turbo or the current turbo. I was making 330 crank NA... hence that #.

Aftermarket products should extend the use of OEM products... not limit it to certain types of use!

so has anyone been in contact with CT to see if they fixed the issue?

are they still selling the clutch and flywheel or did they pull the production?

DO you think they really expect most of us are going to take our cars to a road course? Our cars are better suited for the track than a road course. And lile all-motor said, it shouldn't cause the factory stuff to break.

And when eric(types1967) was having problems with his clutch, it was in traffic.

They are still selling th clutch and flywheel combo. Comptech does not advise useing lightweight pulleys or dampeners - especially in combination with their lightweight flywheel and clutch. Not sure if lessening the dampening on both ends of the crank causes a problem.

After talking to Dean Baty at Speed Distributors and Shad at Comptech, I've decided to give the Comptech Clutch a try. Since the dealer already has my gearbox out and off the motor while they replace my rear seal, they're willing to drop in the new clutch for no additional labor. It's scheduled to get completed next Tuesday. Hopefully I'll fall into the group of people that have good experiences with the Clutch package.

thats not what ive been led to believe about my car (300zxTT)

i have a lightweight flywheel installed, and it seems to work fine

along with most of the high powered z32's that use the same flywheel

Do you want a heavier flywheel with Turbo applications so the Rev's stay up and keep exhaust gas flow to the turbo?

Something was done incorrectly if you had a couple of failures with the pressure plate, otherwise it wouldn't have failed. thats my opinion, but your the guru. 330hp at the crank on NA? sounds high to me, What in the world did you do to get that?; that would translate to close to 300 at the wheels. I'm a beleiver in the liteweight flywheel, blah, blah, blah

103+ mph on a broken clutch (bad launch) NA... you guys can figure out how much at the crank that is.

If a stock 6spd is 260 crank and makes 215 to the wheel... that's a 0.827 factor.
I made 272 to the wheels NA... that is 328.899... I rounded to 330.

Anyways, that's (^^^^^) not the point we are discussing here! Most of the S/C guys run 103-104 mph!

I installed it the first time... 2nd and 3rd were at the dealer (with Shad from Comptech on the phone) - it was a correct install all three times. Maybe it was the dampener or just my car... who knows!

Didn't know you had a N/A dyno. Looks good
