CLS vs 330i

I really do have both a 2001 CLS, blk/blk and a 2001 330i 5sp. As follows: Drive to Vegas or LA or, especially SF - CLS. Flat corners, freeways or traffic - CLS. A tight canyon road - 330i. They're both great drivers. The CLS is quieter and feels more stable, but the fun meter runs higher on the 330i. Punch them both at 10mph and the BM pulls rapidly ahead.
Before 60, the CLS is in the rear mirror. Then the CLS starts to growl. By 80 it's gaining noticeably. It continues to gain to about 110 when, because of the lower gearing, the BM starts to pull away slightly. We chicken out at 120. The CLS will blow away IS300s, A4s, C320s and will stay with a T5. Both cars are stock. The noticeable power characteristic of the CLS is the growl above 5000rpm. The BM is punch off the bottom that just keeps going. We like them both.

Who is us. U and your wife, u and your dad, your mom and dad, please clarify this please, i agree that in some situations the bimmer is going to beat the cl-s but for 15 grand more, i should really hope so. I like the bimmer but i like my cl-s better, its nice inside and its so much roomier in the front and my friends who sit in the back of my car say that the bimmer is smaller. Screw Bmw, they are over priced and bland as hell in the interior. I was goin gto get one , but when they wanted 600 for a 323 lease with 2200 down, i laughed in the guys face and walked out, go tmy cl-s a couple of days later.

15 grand more? This is getting ridiculous. The 330i/ci is obviously more expensive than the CL-S, but (loaded to the brim) we're talking about a $7000-$9000 difference at most vs a CL-S navi.

And you call this bland?

No need to be defensive. The cost difference was $9000. If I could only have one, I would take a TLS, then the Bimmer, then the CLS. After having one again for a while, coupes are a pain in the ass. As for the other driver, does it matter? Gay lover?
Also, the CLS pulled within a car length at the top of third, just over 100. It shifted to fourth just as the BM hit its power band in fourth.

get a cls in a manual tranny and put about 9000 worth of options and then compare.
There will be no shot for the bmw. IMO.

Both, thanks for the post! How many times have you run the cars side by side? Have you raced from a stop?

The inside of that BMW looks pretty good.
I slammed my door on the seat belt today. no damage, but some engineer should have thought that one up. It ws pouring down rain, and I was in a hurry. Now I know better.

Raced them five or six times from different speeds. From 70 up to 100 the CLS slightly gets the nod. We have not raced them from a stop. Too hard to do. Where and how is tough. It's one thing to slow down and punch it, another to stop completely and meter an even take off. Launching the BM from a stop is tough. Perhaps a clutch valve issue.

True, it's as roomy and because it's a four door it's easier to get crap in and out. But the CLS trunk is bigger.

Only people who can't afford a more expensive car compare their lower priced car to the more expensive car and say "the [more expensive car] is not as good because it costs more than mine and I have more features."

I'm convinced!

When was the last time some idiot tried to say his car was "better" than yours because your costs more $35k vs $25k?

If you were making $440,000 a year, you wouldn't think the BMW was overpriced. You would change your mind overnight.

Can someone compare these cars without weighing so heavily on price? It just sounds like we're so cheap and could care less about logos and image and the like.

And don't say you don't care about that stuff because that's fine if you do but 95% of the rest of America does.

Nike, Nokia, Levis, Sprint, Pepsi, Swatch, Sony, Compaq. Oh, but cars, the BMW logo is worthless. I heard this same argument about my exclusive Integra when I first bought it. Now the Integra name really means nothing because owners didn't care and Acura let that one get away, that's for sure.

As soon as the CL becomes a commodity like a Honda Accord, I'm going to move on.

I think it's pretty pointless to compare two cars that are priced about $10,000 apart. They are marketed really for two different segments of the population. The Bimmer is about $40,000 and for people who can afford (or willing to pay) that much, it is a great car and arguably even a great value. The CLS is about $30,000 and for people who can afford that much, it is a great car/value for them. I think its unfair that we bash the Bimmer for being $10,000 more than our car just because we can add $10,000 worth of mods to our car and make it perform as well as the BMW. Accord owners can just as easily say they can put about $5,000 worth of mods of their car to make it perform as well as the CLS.

If I had an extra $10,000 to spare, I just might have bought the BMW 330. As such, I didn't so I bought the CLS. It was the best car and best value that was in the price range of what I wanted to spend. It doesn't make it the best value out there or the best car and we shouldn't get too defensive if someone points out the superiority of another car in certain categories.

Now I think you guys are being too soft. The CLS will HAMMER any six cylinder Mercedes, hell I blew off an E430. It will have an is300 in the mirror by 50, similarly an A4. It does absolutely everything better than a GS300 except for 4 doors. It will out handle any of these except the IS300 and doesn't feel like a piece of crap on a rough freeway like it does. It is by far the best performance bargain out there. I have heard there is a full header back system out there for under a grand which is good for 20 hp. I waqnt one.

WRONG!!!!
A car's value is based on how it compares to other cars, not to how it compares to how much you make a year? WTF? I have no idea why you would even think this is a true statement. If you were making $440K/year, then yeah, maybe a lot of people would buy the 330 over the CL-S, but that doesn't mean that the 330s is any better value than it is to someone making $44K/year.

yeah value means alot to me, thats why i bought my CLS. but that was the max i could afford. not to say that i contrast my earnings to what i drive, but if i had a significantly large income i'd have value more down the scale a bit.
